SFO Mel Leong Testing & Admin Facility
SAN FRANCISCO, CA
MWA performed a feasibility evaluation, provided space plan-
ning, full architectural design, and construction administration
services, and led the project through the City's multi-phased
Clvic Design Review process.
The building is comprised of a large laboratory, a locker room,
break room, conference,/training room, and office spaces.
Ten-foot-tall ceilings, large windows, and light colors through-
out provide an uplifting space flooded with natural light. With
safety as the top priority for the lab, designers focused on
providing visual transparency and separation of workspaces.
Glass cabinet doors allow lab techs to see chemicals and
quickly access manuals easily. Separate lab modules are
designed to be open but limit contamination and tailored to
specif ic regu latory testing.
The building envelope and systems provide increased sound
and vibration isolation from aircraft takeoff and protection from
the corrosive bay environment. Specialized seismic control
joints allow building movement and foundation settling without
impacting structural lntegrity or operations. 1n anticipation of
rising sea levels, the project included a raised floor s ab and
designers integrated an elevated outdoor seating area acces-
sible by ADA-compliant ramps.
KEY FEATURES
> Located on airport property
> Daylii labo'ato'y 'acilities
> Robust sound insulation designed lnto building envelope
system
) MWA coordinated the needs of multiple stakeholders
PROJECT INFORMATION
Project Team: MWA Architects
Project Type: Laboratory on airport property
Size: 8,800 SF
Sustainable Elements: LEED Silver Equivalent
Client: Carollo Engineers, San Francisco nternational Airport
5 l,,l'"\A A,RC!
