Response 2.1: Why would tourists travel to Kittitas Gounty to attend your evenUactivity/facility?* Cultural tourism helps preserve and promote the unique culiural aspects of a place, preventing them from being forgotten or forever lost. lt helps preserve our local culture while allowing our communities to emphasize the uniqueness and to differentiate it from other locations. We think this is one of the reasons people are so atiracted to Roslyn and its' "funkiness". We have the means of attracting visitors ihrough our cultural sites and events. The Roslyn Cemeiery and Coal Miners' Memorial provide the community and visitors an oppofiunity to rediscover the achievements and hardships of our ancestors. They provide a conneciion to our pasl. Visiting our areas' unique treasures and participating in fun, enriching, cultural events creaie admiration and communiiy pride. We already possess all these aspects; our goal is to communicate to a broader audience and capture the attention of visitors that already flock to our area. LTAC funding will assist with this goal. 2500 character limit Response 2.2: Describe the prior success of your evenUactivity/facility to attract tourists. * The Roslyn Cemetery is made up of twenty-seven cemetery communities, each having its own rich and unique history. Together they form the Roslyn Cemetery Complex and exemplity the dynamic and influential past that belongs to Roslyn, WA and the greater Kittitas County area. Located on 19 acres of a wooded and hilly area within the City of Roslyn, it received its designation as a National Historic District in 1978. The development of the Roslyn Cemeteries began prior to Roslyn's incorporation in 1 889. These cemeteries were operated with ihe permission of the Northern Pacific Coal company, later the Northwestern lmprovement Company (NWl)- Originally, there was one general cemetery (now known as the Old City). African Americans were excluded from the original cemeiery and were buried in an adjoining piece of ground. the Mi. Olivet Cemetery. As fraternal organizations came into being, fraternal cemeteries were also developed as distinct and separate cemeteries. Most of the fraternal organizations that once existed locally have now been disbanded for many years. Families and other volunteers currently do most of the cleaning and maintenance in the Roslyn cemeteries. The Kiosk Siructure we built at the main entrance to the Roslyn Cemetery houses an interactive digiial kiosk showing the names of the people interred in lhe 27 different cemeteries throughout the Roslyn Cemetery complex. The data from our visitor log shows the diversity of the people that visit the cemetery not only from oulside of Kittitas County but from all around lhe United States as well as ihe world. Our cultural celebrations such as the Croatian Picnic, Bocce Tournament, and King Coal have been successful in atttacting tourists by offering a vibrant cultural experience.
