C. Shift Responsibilities
Each shift has shared responsibilities as well as its own responsibilities. The biggest
responsibility of each shift is to make sure that the shelter is a safe place and that rules are
followed.
Daily Shelter Operations Evening Shift (6:00 PM — 9:00 PM)
The first shift is responsible for setting up and opening the shelter as well as checking in guests.
• HopeSource staff and volunteers arrive on site at 6:00 PM
• Make a visual assessment of the conditions outside the shelter in case any snow needs to be
removed, or the walkway is icy.
• Ensure all materials needed are available, i.e. plastic totes, mats, sleeping bags, cleaning
supplies, coffee, etc.
• As the guests come in between 6:30-8:00 PM, one volunteer will log them into the shelter.
• Work with guests to place their belongings, except the items they need for the evening, into a
large plastic tote. It will be labeled with the guest's name and stored for the evening.
• Direct the guest to the sleeping area of the facility.
• Issue sleeping bags and blankets and sleeping mat is available.
• Lock doors at 8:00 PM.
• HopeSource staff will do a preliminary intake for any new guests.
• Ensure guests are aware of all emergency exits in the building and outdoor areas in case they
must leave in an emergency.
• Prepare, serve and clean up the evening meal.
• Maintain the Logbook - The shelter logbook should be used to note any actions or incidents that
happen during your shift. Security patrols, guest incidents and any other activity should be noted
in the log with the time of each incident.
• Staff reserve the right to trespass guests that repeatedly or seriously violate shelter rules; these
individuals names will be highlighted in the guidebook.
• Maintain regular communications with the Shelter Coordinator. Provide shelter information,
and discuss supply needs, problems, and plans.
■ Ensure that shelter guests receive updated information about the weather and resources
available to them. Several different service guides can be provided to shelter guests as needed.
• Routinely inspect the safety and sanitation of the facility and ensure that health standards and
guest's needs are being met.
Overnight Shift (10:00 PM — 6:00 AM)
