APPENDIX II: PRELIMINARY AIRPORT ASSESSMENT
APPENDIX
General Aviation Hours Flown
The total number of General Aviation hours flown in the United States reached a low in
1994 of 26,472,000 hours, which represents a decrease of 40.60/o and a compounded
annual decrease of 3.7% over the period from the high of 44,589,000 hours achieved in
1980 (which corresponds with the first-year data was available). While this downward
trend reversed for a period of time (General Aviation hours flown increased 30.1% or a
compounded annual increase of 3.3% from 1994 to a peak of 34,450,000 hours in 2007).
Over the last 5 years, General Aviation hours flown increased 9.5% to 25,629,000 hours
or a compounded annual decrease of 1.1%. Figure 12 represents the number of general
aviation hours flown through 2018.
Figure 12: General Aviation Hours Flown
General Aviation Hours Flown
35 000
GARA Passage
DotConr Bust of 1999
30 000 Recession ot2007-2049
Recession of 2041
9/1 1/2041
Economic Recovery
of 201 0
5.000
rO (o N CO O, c) (\ {.) .$ LO (O l\ @ O) O N (f) S LO (o l- @o) o) O) O) O) O O C) O O O O C) C) OO) O) (:I) O) O) O O O O O O O O C) O O O O O O O O O ON (\ C.r (\ c\l N C\ C{ a\i N N C\ N O'l N (\ C\ N N
-p15l6p
.,. Turbolet
-Turboprop
*Total
While the number of hours flown by piston-powered aircraft have fluctuated (declining for
the most part) since the 1994, the number of turboprop and turbojet aircraft hours flown
have been cyclical (increasing for the most part) over this same 2}-year period. These
fluctuations can be attributed, in large part, to changes in the economy.
At first glance, the increase in the number of active general aviation aircraft since 1994
and the decline in general aviation hours flown since 1999 appearto be contradictory.
However, these divergent trends are supported by the decline in the average number of
hours flown per aircraft which has decreased from a high of 139.3 hours per aircraft in
1994 to 1 19 hours per aircraft in 2018.
€'zs.oooc
l
$ zo ooo
€
5 15 000o-
.E ro ooo
0
Airport Strategic Business Plan, 0712612021 63
