APPENDIX ll: PRELIMINARY AIRPORT ASSESSMENT <br />APPENDIX <br />Active Pilots <br />The number of active pilots in the United States decreased throughout the 1980s and <br />1990s. Since peaking at827,071 in 1980, the number of active pilots has declined 19.6% <br />to 664,565 active pilots in 2019. During this overall decrease, the number of active pilots <br />increased slightly in the late 1990s and early 2000s which can be attributed to pilot <br />development programs. Over the last 5 years, active pilots increased 12.60/o to 664,565 <br />or a compounded annual decrease of 3.0%. Out of the 664,565 active pilots in 2019, <br />113,445 orapproximately 17o/ohold a Certified Flight lnstructorcertificate and 314,168 or <br />47o/o hold instrument ratings.
