KITTITAS COUNTY
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS
PUBLIC WORKS — BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
STUDY SESSION STAFF REPORT
STUDY SESSION DATE: February 28, 2022
TOPIC: North Thorp Highway -Yakima River Bridge CRP 302-20
ACTION REQUESTED: Informational Only
LEAD STAFF:
Mark R. Cook
RECOMMENDATION:
Informational briefing — no action required by the Board.
BRIEFING SUMMARY:
• On December 30, 2019, Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT)
notified Public Works of selection of the North Thorp Highway -Yakima River Bridge
selection to receive funding for repairs.
• Design work and environmental permitting is nearing completion.
• Anticipate construction summer 2022.
• Work requires closure of the bridge.
• Public Works proposes to host an informational meeting for the residents and adjacent
property owners.
BACKGROUND:
The North Thorp Highway -Yakima River Bridge requires preventive maintenance to extend the
life of the structure. This steel truss structure, constructed in 1936 has two lanes for traffic. The
existing paint system has failed throughout much of the bridge truss. This project will rehabilitate
the bridge by removing the existing paint system and repainting, repairing bottom chord panel
points, joints, and repair damaged truss portal members. Federal Funding has been secured
through WSDOT Local Bridge Program for the needed construction work on the bridge.
Construction is planned for this summer.
DISCUSSION:
Paint systems are replaced under warm weather conditions. To protect the surrounding
environment the bridge will be encapsulated while removing the existing paint and applying new
paint. The roadway width across the bridge is not sufficient to safely carry traffic and provide for
the painting to occur at the same time. Public Works proposes to host an informational meeting
for stakeholders including, property owners and emergency services, to share about the project
and provide updated project information. This informational meeting will be held March 30,
2022, at 2:00 p.m. at the conference room in the Upper County Shop.
FISCAL IMPACTS:
None are identified at this time.
ATTACHMENTS:
None
Public Works "Work Session Staff Report" 2022
