CenterFuse Broadband Feasibility Report
Public support for an improved network. We saw a different response when residents were asked
about support for getting better broadband in the community.
When asked if community leaders should prioritize broadband infrastructure, 52% said it should
have the highest priority versus 19%who thought it should have no priority.
When asked if the city should improve broadband infrastructure available to residents and
businesses, 52% of respondents said this should have the highest priority versus 18% who said it
should have no priority.
We interpret these strong responses to mean that the public wants better choice and would like
another broadband option.
Working from Home. The pandemic has clearly had a big impact on working from home with
21% of homes reporting that at least one person is now working from home full time, with
another 7%reporting somebody who works from home at least several days per week. That
percentage would never have been imagined before the pandemic and it's going to be interesting
to see how it changes at the end of the pandemic.
A number of surveys of the largest employers in big cities show that the biggest companies
expect as many as 40% of the work force to remain at home after the pandemic. That's going to
have a major impact on commercial real estate in the big cities.
This represents an opportunity for cities like Ellensburg where people living in your community
now see the possibility of working at home and see they will have the opportunity to more easily
work for businesses not located in Ellensburg. This should have the effect of increasing
household incomes in the community.
The big caveat to this discussion is that 36%of homes that have somebody working from home
reported that the broadband connection was not adequate to work from home. 99% of those
working from home reporting having at least some problems with download and upload speeds,
the ability to stay connected to a work server, or the ability to maintain a video call like on
Zoom.
Doing Schoolwork from Home. The survey showed a nearly identical dissatisfaction with
broadband where 36%of homes with school age children said their home broadband connection
was not adequate for doing schoolwork online.
The Pandemic. We find it interesting that over half of the respondents say they are using more
broadband at home since the onset of the pandemic. We suspect this mostly comes from homes
that are working more from home or doing online schoolwork.
What we find intriguing is that 31% of respondents said they expected to use even more
broadband after the end of the pandemic.
Low Penetration of Non-broadband Products. The city has a significantly lower percentage of
traditional cable customers (46%)than the country as a whole (less than 65%). Traditional cable
Page 26
