CenterFuse Broadband Feasibility Report
have no way of understanding the mix of cellular and landline telephone numbers in the since
numbers can be transferred to and from landlines and cellphones today.
Customer Bills
The survey asked customers what they pay each month for the triple-play services (Internet
access, cable TV, and telephone). We've found that this question always has to be taken with a
grain of salt because what people say they pay is often quite different than what they actually
pay. For example, a household might cite a $100 special price they are paying without realizing
that they actually pay more due to hidden fees and additives. It's especially easy these days for
customers that pay automatically with credit cards or bank debits and not know how much they
pay. With that said, here is what customers say they are spending:
Customers buying a bundle of service $128
Customers buying standalone broadband $ 67
Customers buying standalone cable TV $110
Customers buying standalone telephone $ 28
We note that the $128 average for bundles is lower than what we see in other surveys. We think
that's due to a number of broadband/telephone bundles offered by Consolidated that are less
expensive than Charter bundles that include cable TV. We also think the reported $67 for
standalone broadband is typical.
Working from Home
37% of respondents say that somebody in their homes uses the Internet to work from home. That
is made up of those that work at home full-time (21%), those that work several days per week
(7%), and those that work from home occasionally (9%). Before the pandemic, we rarely saw as
many as 10%of homes with somebody working from home full-time.
36% of homes said their home broadband was not adequate for working from home.
The survey also asked the kinds of broadband issues people experienced when working from
home. We heard that:
• 53% of respondents said they didn't have enough download speed.
• 42% said they didn't have adequate upload speed.
• 50% had trouble maintaining a connection to the office.
• 46% said they had troubles maintaining online video calls (like Zoom).
• Only 1% said they have never experienced a problem.
53% of respondents report having school-age children at home. 31%of those said that the home
broadband connection was not sufficient for supporting online schoolwork. This is a topic that
we will explore more in our study.
Page 22
