CenterFuse Broadband Feasibility Report
Broadband Customers
88% of survey respondents have some form of landline broadband. 45% of respondents use
Charter and 35%use Consolidated. 4%of households are buying broadband from satellites. 4%
of homes buy broadband from a wireless using fixed wireless technology. 1% of residents are
using cellular data instead of landline broadband. 11% of residents don't use the Internet at
home.
Nationwide, the big cable companies have almost 70% of the landline broadband market
compared to the big telcos.1 Charter has a smaller share of the Ellensburg market than what we
normally see in doing surveys around the country. CCG Consulting has been tracking the
nationwide telecom markets for years and we know that customers nationwide are abandoning
telco DSL in favor of the faster cable modem broadband. For example, in 2019 we saw the big
cable companies collectively gain over 3 million new customers for the year while the largest
telcos collectively lost more than 600,000 customers. But in Ellensburg, Consolidated still holds
a substantial share of the broadband market.
The FCC reports that almost 87% of homes nationwide now have a broadband connection.
However, the FCC nationwide numbers are skewed because the numbers don't account for the
roughly 14 million rural homes in the country that have no option to buy broadband. If the FCC
statistics are adjusted for those homes, then the nationwide average broadband penetration
everywhere except those rural areas is 92%. This means that the home broadband penetration
rate in Ellensburg is a lower than the nationwide average.
Cable TV Penetration
In another interesting result, only 46% of survey respondents report the purchase of traditional
cable TV. That is significantly lower than the nationwide average, which was around 65% when
the survey was conducted. In Ellensburg, 26% of homes use Charter, 1%use Consolidated, and
19% use satellite providers. In most cities we've studied, the satellite penetration of cable TV is
around 10%, so satellite penetration in Ellensburg is higher than usual.
25% of respondents claim to be cord-cutters that watch all video content online. According to a
recent survey by the Leichtman Research Group, about 20% of homes nationwide now only
watch online video.
Telephone Penetration
38% of homes still claim to have a landline telephone. The nationwide landline penetration has
dropped below 35%.
This is the one statistic from the survey that we can't fully trust. This statistic could be driven by
the percentage of landlines that were included in the list of telephone numbers we purchased. We
1 At the end of the third second quarter of 2020, the big cable companies had 72.0 million broadband customers
while the big telcos had 32.9 million customers.
Page 21
