Response 2.2 *
Application Questions: Part 2
Describe the prior success of your evenUactivily/facility in atlraclicl,r lourists.
Each year, WSSSM hosts in person events that attract between 150-300 attendees
per event. ln 2019, we hosted Martin Volken, backcountry ski guide. In 2018. lw
hosted Larry Schick, the "Porader Poobah" to talk about the upcoming ski season
u,eather and Mark Music from Sturtevant's to lalk about the latest in ski equipment.
ln 2018, u,e did a meet'n greet with Olympian Phil Mahre right around the time of
the Winier Olympics. ln 2017, Loraell Skoog gave a presentation about the
Mountaineers Patrol Race, the oldest continuing ski race, first held in 1930.
We have advertised these events throughout own ra,ebsite, \MM/v.\/sssm.org, our
email list, Facebook (some small, targeted paid campaigns) mailed postcards and
those posted around the pass and at strategic partner locations. We have also
sponsored events where are target audience might be located including the
Warren Miller ski nrovies and the Ski Bonkers sale put on by Sturtevant's. Booths at
these events (over multiple days) have allor, red us lo advertise our events, promote
tourism at the Pass and in Kittitas County, and showcase the offerings of the
MUSCLiM,
While specific events draw larger crowds, the regular museum visitors have been
drann in by permanent WSDOT freevray signage advertisirrg the mr-rseum on l-90
both tr,est and east bound (NEXI EXT signage). Our ner*ly revamped r,rirebsite and
social media interaction has also been a good source of marketing for the museum.
With Covid, eperts predict that small, local, museums like WSSSM will benefit.
"Tourism recovery typically begins locally," said Elizabeth Monahan, of
Tripadvisor.com. "Travelers tend to first venture out closer to home, and visit their
local eateries, stay local for a weekend geta\,ay or travel domestically before a
robust demand for international travel returns.' (CNBC, "Travel changed after 9111
Here's how it will look afler the Covid- 19 pandemic finally recedes," May 10, 2020).
Outdoor activity at the pass this summer \fias over capacity. Wilh many families
having flexible \iork and school schedules, this winter season will be very busy,
predicts Guy Lawence, General Manager of The Summit at Snoqualmie and
WSSSM Board Member.
2500 character limt
3llmpact
