KITTITAS COUNTY
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS
PUBLIC WORKS — BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
STUDY SESSION STAFF REPORT
STUDY SESSION DATE: November 25, 2019
TOPIC: Kittitas Valley Fire and Rescue Request for Assistance
ACTION REQUESTED: Provide Direction to Staff
LEAD STAFF:
Mark R. Cook
RECOMMENDATION:
Direct that staff provide 20 hours of staff time assisting Kittitas Valley Fire and Rescue
(KVFR) search for potential suitable sites relocating the fire station at Fairview and
Brickmill and evaluate current fire station locations for 5 mile response coverage
1.1 91Iula : 1
• KVFR desires relocating the fire station at Fairview and Brickmill Roads.
• KVFR believes Public Works can utilize the County's geographic
information system (GIS) to screen for possible suitable relocation sites.
• PW believes that we can provide up to 20 hours of staff effort supporting
KVFR.
BACKGROUND:
The current KVFR fire station has outgrown the parcel of land they occupy. The District
desires finding a more suitable location and proposes relocating the existing station once
a suitable site is found and secured. PW has the expertise to assist the District.
DISCUSSION:
Chronic understaffing in PW limits the amount of support available to KVFR at this time.
It is reasonable to offer up to 20 hours of staff time towards the effort. PW currently has
a single employee capable of performing the desired analysis. If PW is unable to provide
sufficient analysis suitable to the District at the end of 20 hours, it might be possible to
pass our work over to the IT Department for further support. This approach spreads the
workload impact between the two departments of the Board capable of supporting the
District.
FISCAL IMPACTS:
A planning level cost estimate of $1,000 is likely sufficient covering employee wages and
benefits.
ATTACHMENTS: None.
PUBLIC WORKS BOARD OF COUNTY CONINUSSIONERS WORK SESSION STAFF REPORT
