At present, the department is operating with
one fewer full-time Maintenance Technician (FTE), and while
salary savings are being realized by not immediately filling that
position, the reduction in workforce presents operational challenges
during the peak fair and summer grounds season.
In previous years, the department maintained adequate seasonal
staffing by utilizing a six-month seasonal position that was split
into two three-month roles (temporary fair aides); however, due to
current staffing circumstances, that flexibility is no longer available
as one of the past temporary employees was now able to,serve as a
seasonal employee, working the full six-month term. The request to
continue with a temporary three-month Fair Aide is intended to
maintain the level of seasonal support historically relied upon the
last few years, as the department typically operates with three
additional seasonal staff during this period while also being fully
staffed with FTEs. Without this temporary position, the department
would effectively be down two staff members compared to normal
operations.
Additionally, maintaining this temporary role will provide
necessary time to evaluate long-term staffing structure and
operational efficiency, including assessing whether the current
Maintenance Technician I position is appropriately classified or if a
transition to a new role would better meet departmental needs. This
evaluation period is critical to developing a well -supported and
data -driven recommendation for the upcoming budget cycle.
Overall, the temporary position is requested as a practical short-
term solution to ensure continuity of service levels while allowing
for thoughtful analysis and planning regarding permanent staffing
adjustments. There will be no added budget impacts, if approved.
INTERACTION: Kittitas Valley Event Center
Human Resources
Board of County Commissioners
