Transit boarding island that is designed to allow bicycles to pass
between the sidewalk and island thereby avoiding a bus-bike
conflict when the bus stops at the boarding island. Can be used
in combination with a bike lane, bufferred bike lane, or separated
bike lane. The treatment can also reduce vehicle speeds as the
island itself visually narrows the roadway and can have a traffic
calming effect.
Cost $$
Low Cost / Quick Build alternative available

BIKEWAYS
SAFE SYSTEM HIERARCHY
Remove Severe
Conflicts
Reduce Vehicle
Speeds
Floating Transit Island
or Bus Boarding Island
Tier 1 Tier 2 Tier 3 Tier 4
Green conflict striping is green pavement markings in a dashed
pattern that extend across bike lanes approaching an intersection
and/or going through an intersection.
