should have been aware of that before entering. This is a safety failure.Another example is one
person is paid for returning to a funeral home to complete fingerprinting or blood draws, while
another deputy has been told they will not be paid for the same work.We do not know which
approach is the actual policy.
We ask that you establish clear, consistent communication. We applaud your Friday emails, but
when safety information is known, it should be shared immediately. You and Hunter should be
giving the same information to all staff, and policies should be applied uniformly.
We are being asked to take on significant additional duties without corresponding changes to
compensation or job descriptions. Fingerprinting,x-rays, and blood draws have been added to
our responsibilities. Past practice was for office personnel to handle X-rays and medical records
during weekday shifts. With three people in the office and sometimes no calls for days, the office
has time. We do not understand why this is being shifted to deputy coroners.
Fifty cents per hour on-call and minimum wage for duties outside of a call is inadequate
compensation for the responsibilities we carry. The quality of recent applicants reflects how low
expectations and compensation have become. Deputies feel like they are being paid differently
for the same type of work. This is unfair and possibly illegal.Your policy requiring a case file to
be started within two hours of a call is impractical in many instances. We ask that you review
compensation for added duties and ensure equal pay for equal work. We ask that you set realistic
timelines based on actual field conditions.
This is difficult to write, but it must be said. We have collectively lost confidence in the leader of
this office. There have been multiple instances where you have not been honest, factual, or
transparent with staff.
When forming the interview panel for the Chief Deputy Coroner position, a known conflict of
interest existed between an interview panel member and an interviewee. That panel member was
not asked to recuse themselves.Yet when Dave recently excused himself from a deputy coroner
interview due to a conflict of interest,he was publicly thanked. We do not understand why there
is a double standard.
In the months since you were appointed to office, leadership has been characterized by threats,
inconsistent messaging, and a lack of support for the team. Rather than bringing us together,
these approaches have created infighting, distrust, resentment, and anxiety in an already high-
stress profession.
A leader's job is to develop their team, provide resources for success, and create an environment
where people can do their best work. We do not feel uplifted. We all feel targeted.
Page 3
