Kittitas County Courthouse Energy Audit <br />DEFINITIONS <br />These definitions come from ASHRAE (ASHRAE 2023), ASPE (American Society of Plumbing <br />Engineers 2013), and IEEE (The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers 2023). <br />ACH Air Changes per Hour —ventilation airflow divided by room volume. It indicates <br />how many times, during one hour, the air volume from a space is replaced with <br />outdoor air. <br />AHU Air -Handling Unit —assembly consisting of sections containing a fan or fans and <br />other necessary equipment to perform one or more of the following functions: <br />circulating, filtration, heating, cooling, heat recovery, humidifying, <br />dehumidifying, and mixing of air. Usually connected to an air -distribution <br />system. <br />ASHRAE International, diverse organization representing building system design and <br />industrial processes professionals around the world. <br />BAS Building Automation System —an energy management system, usually with <br />additional capabilities, relating to the overall operation of the building in which it <br />is installed, such as equipment monitoring, protection of equipment against <br />power failure, and building security. Compare to building management system. <br />BMS Building Management System —an energy management system relating to the <br />overall operation of the building in which it is installed. It often has additional <br />capabilities, such as equipment monitoring, protection of equipment against <br />power failure, and building security. It may also be a direct digital control (DDC) <br />system in which the mode of control uses digital outputs to control processes or <br />elements directly. <br />Btu British thermal unit —The amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 <br />pound (0.45 kg) of water 1°F (0.565°C). <br />Cavitation The formation of bubbles in a liquid because of a partial vacuum, which damages <br />adjacent parts when these bubbles revert to a liquid. <br />CHW Chilled Water —water used as a cooling medium (particularly in air-conditioning <br />systems or in processes) at below ambient temperature. <br />CHWS Chilled Water System —(also known as hydronic cooling system) cooling system <br />for a building in which the cooling -conveying medium is chilled water and the <br />cooling emitters are radiators, convectors, or panel coils.
