The Current Kittitas County Logo
Lets use the same criteria to critique the current logo.
Simple
The image and typography are both “busy.” The
landscape scene has a jigsaw puzzle feel, with every
shape bordered in black. The type is small, and the
tagline is wordy.
Impactful & Engaging
The generic illustration of the “mountain range to
river” concept, all tightly bound in the double border
of black, combined with the overall symmetrical
design doesn’t encourage the viewer’s eye to move
around and through the image. A common test for
visual impact is to squint while looking at the image
to blur the details. When tested here the image
fades into the background.
Memorable
Memorableness suffers from all the problems
stated above.
Timeless
While the designer avoided fads for the most part,
the logo has the dated appearance of an image that
was created using early CAD software.
Versatile
This logo is not versatile. It really can only be used
in the single format. In small sizes the text becomes
unreadable. The “gravestone” shape does not work
well for many applications especially for the web.
Appropriate
Using the landscape as a metaphor for the County is
not a bad idea, the logo just doesn’t take advantage
of it.
