REGIONAL ANALYSIS
Geographically the Pacific Northwest is in the far northwest corner of the United States. It has a
very favorable climate because it is under the influence of the Japanese Current. Washington is
divided by the Cascade Mountains with approximately one-third of the land area lying west of
the mountains and two-thirds on the other side. Conversely, the population is two-thirds on the
west and one-third on the east. The climate is moist on the western side and and on the east, but
there is clean air and a plentiful supply of water for irrigation from the Columbia, Snake,
Yakima, and Okanogan Rivers and from deep wells. Annual precipitation on the western side of
the state exceeds 40 inches while in Central Washington the average precipitation is
approximately 7 to 10 inches.
Both Continental and Marine weather patterns influence the climate of the area. Moist air coming
in from the Pacific Ocean and cold air moving southward from Canada affect the climate of the
Pacific Northwest. The weather systems are modified by the Rocky Mountains to the east and
north and by the Cascades to the east and west. The summers are hot, and the winters are clear,
dry, and cold.
The topography of the western part of the state is basically low, rolling coastal hills that were
originally covered with timber. The eastern part is generally a south sloping plain that is deeply
dissected by the drainage of the Columbia, Snake, Okanogan, and the Yakima rivers.
Economically, Washington is located strategically. Its climate is varied but not extreme. Its job
opportunities are many, from high tech to farm labor. There are metropolitan areas with cultural
activities and also quiet rural areas. Washington is a way of life, and it is a progressive and
optimistic state. The aerospace industry, lumbering, shipping facilities, and other manufacturing
industries dominate the western area especially near Seattle. It is a major shipping port to the
Pacific Rim Countries and Alaska. It is the financial center of the Pacific Northwest.
Location
Geographically the Pacific Northwest is located in the far northwest corner of the United States.
It has a very favorable climate because it is under the influence of the Japanese Current.
Washington is divided by the Cascade Mountains with approximately one-third of the land area
lying west of the mountains and two-thirds on the other side.
