Each year the County inspects approximately 50%of its bridges on an alternating basis to comply with the
NBIS requirement of a 24-month routine inspection cycle. Inspection reports are then submitted to the
Washington State Department of Transportation. Bridge files including inspection report history are on
file in the Public Works office, both in a paper and digital format. During these inspections potential
problems and maintenance issues are identified and documented.
BRIDGE PROJECT TEN-YEAR HISTORY
2024
The Liberty Road bridge replacement project over Swauk Creek was completed in the fall of 2024.This
new prestressed concrete slab structure with cast in place concrete deck and concrete barrier replaces a
weight restricted and structurally deficient bridge. This project was funded with federal funds.
The Cooke Canyon Road bridge replacement project over the Hiline Canal was completed in the spring
of 2024. This new prestressed concrete slab structure replaces a weight restricted and structurally
deficient bridge. This project was funded with federal funds.
The Faust Road bridge replacement project over Town Ditch was completed in the spring of 2024. This
is also a new prestressed concrete slab structure replacing a weight restricted, structurally deficient
bridge. This project was also funded with federal funds.
2023
A new Pre-stressed Concrete T-girder bridge was constructed on North Fork Teanaway Road crossing
the North Fork Teanaway River replacing a weight restricted concrete structure with previous accident
damage. This project was funded with federal funds.
Also new in 2023, a Prestressed Concrete T-girder bridge on the Vantage Highway replaced an aging and
weight restricted timber element bridge that crosses the Cascade canal.
During the winter of 2023,Cooke Canyon Bridge (Bridge no.80181) and Faust Road Bridge (Bridge no.
88212) have been removed and the new structures are currently under construction with an estimated
completion date of spring of 2024.
2022
Improvements were completed along Kachess Lake Road at mile post 2.75.This removed the 36-inch CMP
and constructed an 18-ft wide box culvert, Bridge no. 13072 (OB). Stream channel work was completed
to improve conveyance as well as minimize required maintenance from spring runoff events.
Extensive preventative maintenance was completed on the North Thorp Highway Bridge (Bridge no.
97341) spanning the Yakima River. The work performed is to extend the life of the NSTM structure. The
paint system was removed, and a new paint system applied.Joint repairs and strip seals at the end of the
bridges were also improved.Truss portals, which had been damaged from impact of oversize loads were
repaired.
Construction began on the replacement of structure no. 89342 located on Vantage Hwy at mile post 5.24
over the Cascade Canal. The existing timber bridge was damaged and load rated. Construction work was
planned to occur over the winter during the time irrigation flows are reduced.
Kittitas County 2024 Annual Bridge Report
