Fire Emergencv Protocol: Upon detecting a fire, activate the fire alarm and begin evacuating the
building. Staff assist guests in calmly exiting via designated fire exits. Once outside, everyone
gathers at the designated assembly area. The designated staff member contacts 911 to report the
fire and provides key details to first responders.
The Program Manager or designated lead ensures that no one re-enters the building until it has
been declared safe by emergency responders.
Medical Emergencv Protocol: lf a guest or staff member experiences a medical emergency, staff
should assess the situation and immediately call 911 if necessary. First aid is administered only by
those trained to do so, while others ensure the area is clear for emergency personnel.
After the incident, staff document the emergency in an incident report and notify the Program
Manager.
Severe Weather Protocol: ln the case of extreme weather (e.g., blizzards), the shelter implements
a "shelter-in-place" procedure. All windows and doors are secured, and additional warm supplies
(blankets, clothing) are distributed to guests. The Program Manager monitors weather alerts and
coordinates with local authorities for updates.
lf staff or guests cannot safely travel due to weather conditions, key staff may be asked to stay
onsite, and local emergency services may be contacted for assistance if necessary.
Securitv Threat Protocol: lf a security threat occurs (e.g., violent behavior, unauthorized entry),
staff should attempt to calmly de-escalate the situation while calling for assistance from security
personnel or law enforcement. Guests and staff should be directed to a safe area if the situation
poses an immediate threat.
Depending on the nature of the threat, staff may either evacuate or lock down the facility. The
Program Manager is responsible for coordinating these actions.
Evacuation Procedures: lead guests through the nearest exits, following designated evacuation
routes posted throughout the shelter. A headcount is taken at the designated assembly point to
ensure everyone has evacuated safely. Emergency responders are contacted if necessary.
Post-Emergencv Procedures: After any emergency, the Program Manager conducts a debrief with
staff to review the response and discuss any improvements. An incident report is completed to
document key details of the emergency and actions taken.
Version last reviewed on {date}
20
