REPLACEMENT AND REHABILITATION PLAN FOR DEFICIENT BRIDGES
The County's focus is to replace or rehabilitate bridges that are classified as structurally deficient,
functionally obsolete or weight restricted. The current Six Year Transportation Improvement Plan includes
the following bridge projects:
Replacement
- Liberty Road —Swauk Creek Bridge (Bridge no. 07101)
- Cooke Canyon Bridge (Bridge no. 80181)
- Faust Road Bridge (Bridge no. 88212)
- Lambert Road Bridge (Bridge no. 06345) maintenance
- Reecer Creek Road over Towne Ditch (Bridge no. 88273)
Short Span bridges do not qualify for State or Federal funding assistance. These smaller structures serve
an important role in the County's transportation network. Short Span bridges are also reviewed and
recognized for their deficiency and need for repairs. The TIP also includes the following project:
- Short Span Bridge Replacement — Phase 1
MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS
Bridge maintenance and repairs are accomplished by a combination of County Forces and contractors.
This work includes cleaning and minor deck patching, and bridge rail replacement. Contractors provide
support with resources currently not available within the County.
In 2023 Public works road crews performed multiple minor maintenance work orders that included
asphalt patching bridge decks, replacing damaged and missing bridge rail components, and trimming and
removing brush and trees interfering with bridge elements and sight distance issues.
Examples of more significant maintenance repairs include maintenance work completed at two bridges in
2022 using contracted forces that performed the following:
Through the inspection process undermining was identified along the abutment for structure no. 89092-
CB. Public Works road crew worked to place material and armor the structure in order to help prevent
future scour.
Due to concerns about the structure, beginning in 2018 Public Works began monitoring bridge no. 87244-
OB. In addition to the regular inspections, monthly monitoring of the structure occurs. This monitoring
includes collecting survey data on set points and then comparing those to the baseline year. This
monitoring effort continued through 2021, with no significant movement observed. In 2022 Public Works
worked with a contractor to place control density fill at either abutment. The placement of the fill will
slow the erosion and degradation of the material and extend the life of the bridge. Additional monitoring
was done, and determined to discontinue after the repair.
Maintenance work orders are generated based on inspections performed. Work orders are prioritized by
Public Works staff. This information is then provided to Road Maintenance that then performs the repair.
Contracting construction services are also used to perform needed repairs.CONSULTANT
Kittitas County 2023 Annual Bridge Report
