BRIDGE INVENTORY SUMMARY As of December 31, 2023 Kittitas County has 111 bridges in the National Bridge Inventory System (NBIS). Current inventory includes: - 2 NSTM (Previously Fracture Critical) - 31 structurally deficient - 17 Functionally Obsolete - 18 weight restricted Local Agency Bridges Kittitas County Public Works provides inspection services to cities and towns on a reimbursable basis. The County works with the local agencies under agreement conditions set forth in interlocal agreements. The County's services are provided to support cities that do not have the needed resources or expertise. Currently, the County provides routine inspection services on 36local agency bridges. This includes: • City of Ellensburg —18 NBIS and 4 Short Span • Town of Kittitas-1 NBIS and 3 Short Span • City of Cie Elum —4 Short Span Short Span Structures Short span bridges are defined as spans that are 20-feet or less in length and opening widths over 6-feet for timber structures and 8-feet for steel and concrete structures. Short span bridges are not reported to WSDOT or FHWA, Kittitas County routinely schedules and inspects these structures. There are currently 150 short span bridges on the Kittitas County road network. These structures are not eligible for bridge funding through FHWA or WSDOT. Private Bridges Throughout Kittitas County there are many privately owned bridges. Kittitas County does not inspect these bridges on a regular basis. The Kittitas County Code states that all bridges and major drainage structures serving public or private roads and driveways shall conform to KCC 12.01.110, 12.01.120 and 20.02.050. New bridges and repair of existing bridges require a permit through Kittitas County Public Works. Existing privately owned bridges are not reviewed unless a repair or replacement occurs.
