KITTITAS COUNTY
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS
PUBLIC WORKS — BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
2023 STUDY SESSION STAFF REPORT
STUDY SESSION DATE: February 13, 2023
TOPIC: Portable Toilets at Ryan Thompson Park
ACTION REQUESTED: Direct Staff
LEAD STAFF:
Mark R. Cook and Ryan Berge.
RECOMMENDATION:
Support staff s desire deploying two portable toilets at Ryan Thompson Park from May 1
to September 30 every year going forward.
BRIEFING SUMMARY:
• Increasing use of Ryan Thompson Park is resulting in human waste at the park.
• Two portable toilets (May 1 to September 30) will cost approximately $1,500.
BACKGROUND:
Recently, Public Works learned from a service club volunteer of human waste
encountered during various mowing operations conducted in 2022. The lack of nearby
public toilet facilities warrants evaluation of deploying portable toilets that are serviced
on a regular basis.
DISCUSSION:
Deploying two portable toilets at Ryan Thompson Park (May 1 to September 30)
annually is estimated at costing approximately $1,500. Area service club members
routinely volunteer mowing grass areas around the pond. Recent efforts improving water
quality and access improvements from Public Works, are expected to increase pond
usage. Public Works desires improving the fishing experience of pond users by
contracting for sanitary services at the park.
FISCAL IMPACTS:
$1,500 is estimated for two portable toilets for five months. There is sufficient budget in
the 2023 Parks and Recreation Fund. Future annual budgets will require support from the
general fund.
ATTACHMENTS:
None.
Public Works "Work Session Staff Report", 2023
