COVID-19 lnfofmatiOn li you had a planrled evenl rr 2020 or 2021. lvhether lhey v.rere able to take place or no{. please describe any
successes and challenges you exp--.ienced.
The pandemic upended all our production plans last year, and even through the
beginning of 2021 . We had already invested close to $3400 in royalties to secure the
rights to produce this extremely popular Broadway show. Mamma Mia, so our focus
has always been on finding a way to reschedule this production versus canceling ii
outright. With a cast and crew of 30+, live band of 10 musicians, and extensive sets
and costume needs, this show requires our biggest mainstage to do it justice, and
the opportunity for the largest audience to recoup the costs of putting on the show.
Audience and per-formance related restrictions necessitated the rescheduling of the
original event from July 2020 la July 2021 . But in early January. with updates at the
local and state level, it was clear that many of the restrictions would be in place until
June or July of 2021. That would hamper our audition and 6-week rehearsal
schedule and limit our audience size to the point where it wasn't financially feasible
to break even. We made the decision to move our two-person winter play (Grealer
Tuna) to the summer slot so that we could accommodate smaller cast and audience
sizes. The company that owns the royalties almost didn't let us reschedule the show
for 2022, because a National Tour of the show will be starting, and we faced the
prospect of cancelling this beloved show completely. Only to turn around and have
the rights be restored two weeks laler. 2022 is our last chance to produce Mamma
Mia for the foreseeable future. and we are determined to make it happen.
Our Board of Directors has had to make tough decisions and it reviewed, revised,
and drafted VMT policies for auditions and rehearsals. cleaning procedures,
mitigating health risks for audiences. and cancellation policies based on the CDC,
Staie and local guidelines. VMT got creative with our fundraising as well, moving our
auction online. We also explored new technologies ihat would allow us to stream
performances and successfully held three viriual events in 2020. the "No Show",
"Songs of Hope - Cabaret", and "Noel: An Elegant Evenrng of Music and Poetry."
ln 2021 . we are proud that we were able to produce our Rising Star production for
youth (The Phantom Tollbooth) this spring, our two-man comedy of Greater Tuna
this summer; and this November will be our first dinner theatre/cabaret style event,
Cabernet Cabaret. We've been able to successfully adapt these productions this
year to meet the changing health guidelines.
2500 character limit
