Preface The BehavePlus fire modeling system, version 5.o began as a DOS program for fire behavior prediction in the 1970s. The original BEHAVE was later combined with fuel modeling programs to make it the BEHAVE fire behavior prediction and fuel modeling system. When computers devel- oped to the point that it was possible, BEHAVE was made available in the field in 1984. A major update began in 1999 with a complete redesign and a change from FORTRAN to C. BehavePlus, Version 1.0 was released in 2001. Modeling capabilities and features have been added with each version. Some of the design described in this report is based on decisions made more than 10 years ago. We recognize that there are deficiencies, but we also know that BehavePlus is a successful sys- tem and, in most ways, is a useful tool for fire managers. Hopefully, there will be a next generation system (BehavePlusPlus?)—another major update possibly done in combination with other fire behavior and fire danger systems. We hope that strengths as well as deficiencies of BehavePlus will be considered as future systems are developed. In addition to helping users get the most out of the BehavePlus system, this report can be a reference for designers of the next generation of fire modeling systems.
