Preface <br />The BehavePlus fire modeling system, version 5.o began as a DOS program for fire behavior <br />prediction in the 1970s. The original BEHAVE was later combined with fuel modeling programs to <br />make it the BEHAVE fire behavior prediction and fuel modeling system. When computers devel- <br />oped to the point that it was possible, BEHAVE was made available in the field in 1984. A major <br />update began in 1999 with a complete redesign and a change from FORTRAN to C. BehavePlus, <br />Version 1.0 was released in 2001. Modeling capabilities and features have been added with each <br />version. <br />Some of the design described in this report is based on decisions made more than 10 years ago. <br />We recognize that there are deficiencies, but we also know that BehavePlus is a successful sys- <br />tem and, in most ways, is a useful tool for fire managers. Hopefully, there will be a next generation <br />system (BehavePlusPlus?)—another major update possibly done in combination with other fire <br />behavior and fire danger systems. We hope that strengths as well as deficiencies of BehavePlus <br />will be considered as future systems are developed.
