Special Event Application information for Manastash Ridge trail running and navigation
event weekend, taking place in Manastash Ridge portion of Wenas State Wildlife Area
lNlay 28-29,2022
About the Organizer:
Meridian Geographics, LLC (doing business as MerGeo, Northwest Trail Runs, and Northwest Navigation Races) is a
Seattle-based company that produces outdoors events in the trail running and land navigation areas and offers map and
compass education to children and adults. MerGeo was founded in2004, and in recent years has put on about 50 events
per year, ranging from 4-kilometer trail runs in urban parks to S0-kilometer ultra runs and 24-hour navigation races over
large areas ofrugged terrain.
Onsite Contacts:
o Eric Bone, owner and course designer, 206-291-8250
r Michael Havrda, Volunteer Coordinator, 425-269-8442
Description of Use:
This event includes a trail run on Saturday, May 28, and a navigation event on Sunday, May 29. The trail run will offer
a choice of four distances, 5km, 7 miles, half marathon (13 miles), and 50km (3 1 miles), and we expect approximately
150 participants to attend. The navigation event will offer two time limits, 3 hours and 6 hours, and participants will
travel on foot to individually or in teams of 2-5 people to visit as many checkpoints as they can within their chosen time
limit. We expect approximately 35 participants to take part in the navigation event. Trail run routes will be clearly
marked with ribbons and signs, and navigation checkpoints will be marked with orange and white flags. All markings
will be removed immediately following the event, and any trash will be picked up. Participants will be required to
adhere to leave-no-trace practices.
All activities will comply with state guidance on conducting outdoor sporting activities safely during the current phase
of the COVID-19 pandemic, including mask-wearing, distancing, screening, and sanitary measures.
Safety and First Aid:
Our standard safety procedures include tracking the whereabouts of all mnners while they are on-course, as well as
implementing search and first aid procedures in case of a runner that is thought likely to be lost or injured. In the very
rare event of a medical emergency at one of our events, we call emergency first responders and coordinate teams on the
ground to render first aid to and,/or evacuate (when appropriate) the sick or injured individual and to guide the first
responders to the location ofthe person in dishess as soon as possible.
Parking and Public Roads:
We plan to park participants, staff, and volunteers along the north side of Umptanum Road, in the vicinity of 13800
Umptanum Road (GSggle_US4p). This is an area that sees some parking already by recreational users of the trails. The
road is wide along this stretch, so there will be ample room for two-way traffic. Event staff will manage and direct
parking to ensure efficient use of space, to leave lanes open for two-way traffic, including any emergency and official
vehicles, and to avoid damage to the road shoulder or adjacent vegetation. Participants will be notified of the parking
directions and to follow staff directions in pre-event information. The road will remain open and available for normal
use, and thus no closure, traffic control, or detour will be needed.
