In Kittitas County injury and poisoning are among the leading causes of hospitalization
among adults ages 25-64, not including hospitalizaiions for pregnancy and childbirth. These rates
are conceming as they are ail significantly higher than the state rates2. Drug overdose deaths are
a largely preventable cause of premature death in a population. Prescripticn drug abuse-
particularly opiates-has reached epidemic levels within the United States.l The indicator for drug
misuse in a population is the number of drug poisoning deaths per 100,000 population. There
were I I total deaths due to drug overdose in Kittitas County (combined years20l4-16) including
all prescription and intravenous drug use.a The raortaliry rate due to all drug overdoses is I per
100,000, InZaL6, the morfality rate for opiate overdose is less than 1.6 per 100,000.5 Kittitas
County has the fifth lowest rate of death due to drug poisoning in the state6. While the county
appeaffi to be addressing the opioid epidemic successfully, it is important to note that
incarcerated individuals are disproportionately affected by substance use disorder compared to
the general population. At point of intake, over 3AYa of newly incarcerated individuals reported
experiencing a substance use disorder to a corections departrnent staff member. The acrual
representation may be higher when disclosure is moved to a medical setting.
Program-specific Priority Area - A lack of accessibllity to treatment providers and facilities
] Washington Statc Departucnt ofl Heafth, Ccnter for Health Statisiics.
