KITTITAS COUNTY
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS
PUBLIC WORKS — BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
STUDY SESSION STAFF REPORT
STUDY SESSION DATE: May 24, 2021
TOPIC: 2021 Recreation and Tourism Plan Public Comments
ACTION REQUESTED: Direct Staff
LEAD STAFF:
Mark R. Cook
RECOMMENDATION:
Direct staff to schedule a public hearing considering adoption of the 2021 Kittitas County
Recreation/Tourism Plan.
BRIEFING SUMMARY:
• Public comment was solicited from early March ending on May 7, 2021.
• Minor edits are being requested for consideration.
• Staff is ready to schedule a public hearing for plan adoption.
• Staff can then finalize the document for redistribution to interested agencies and
groups to create a contact network for future planning and implementation.
BACKGROUND:
Public Works staff opened a public comment period in early March ending May 7, 2021.
The plan was sent via email attachment to a list of potential stakeholders and interested
parties on March 11, 2021. The plan was also announced and made available via Press
Release, Board of County Commissioner (BOCC) Facebook page, and the Northern
Kittitas County Tribune April 6, 2021. There appeared to be interest in the plan by many
agencies and groups, but actual comments are somewhat limited. Comments were
received via email from Grant County PUD, Mountains to Sound Greenway, Kittitas
County Chamber of Commerce, Cle Elum Downtown Association, and The Nature
Conservancy. The published press release is attached as EXHIBIT 1. A complete
compilation of comments received appears as EXHIBIT 2.
DISCUSSION:
Several requests are being made that would adjust the plan. These requests are
summarized below for Board direction.
• Grant County PUD (GCPUD) recognized coordination efforts between agencies
including GCPUD, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, Washington
State Parks, and Kittitas County to provide high-quality recreation amenities and
opportunities while enhancing the shoreline and natural resources.
Public Works "Work Session Staff Report", 2021
