Adopted by the Board of County Commissioners
February 3, 2009
14
Length of Time Homeless
An increasing majority of homeless households have been homeless for one month or less
(83.3% in 2008, up from 11.7% in 2006 and 60.5% in 2007). This is good news. Combined with a
lower total homeless population, we can surmise that there are fewer homeless families and
individuals in Kittitas County now than there were a few years ago, and that homeless families
and individuals today are homeless for short periods of time.

Length of Time
Homeless 2006 2007 2008
One month or less 12 11.7% 26 60.5% 30 83.3%
4-12 months 49 47.6% 7 16.3% 2 5.5%
More than 1 year 42 40.8% 10 23.3% 4 11.1%

Causes of Homelessness
Inability to pay rent or mortgage has increased over the past several years to become the
number one reason for homelessness in Kittitas County (21.9% in 2008, up from 8.8% in 2006).
Domestic violence and family break-ups are the second leading causes at 9.0% and 8.5%
respectively, up from 2007. Job loss has decreased from 9.9% in 2006 to 3.0% in 2008.

And in more detail…

What situations have
caused you to be
homeless? 2006 2007 2008
Domestic violence
victim 28 7.3% 8 4.1% 18 9.0%
Family break-up 34 8.8% 10 5.1% 17 8.5%
Unable to pay
rent/mortgage 34 8.8% 21 10.7% 44 21.9%
