Adopted by the Board of County Commissioners
February 3, 2009
13
Homeless Veteran Population
There were no veterans in the 2008 Point in Time data collection. However, in 2006, 5.9% of
homeless households reported at least one person had served on active duty in the Armed
Forces of the US or was receiving Veterans Administration benefits. In 2007, 14.0% of homeless
households reported the same.
Current Living Status of Homeless Population
Most homeless people are temporarily living with friends or family (63.4% in 2008). For this
reason, our community may not realize the extent of the homeless population in Kittitas
County. Many people think of homelessness as panhandlers sitting on the sidewalk, as in the
large metropolitan areas. This is not what homelessness looks like in Kittitas County. Another
17.2% of homeless people are currently living in Transitional Housing, and 11.9% are in
Emergency Shelters. The number of homeless people living out of doors has decreased from
7.6% in 2006 to 0% in 2008.

And in more detail…

Current Living Status 2006 2007 2008
Emergency Shelter 11 5.6% 9 5.8% 16 11.9%
Transitional Housing 37 18.9% 29 18.8% 23 17.2%
Temporarily living with
family or friends 121 61.7% 111 72.1% 85 63.4%
Out of doors (street,
tent) 15 7.6% 4 2.6% 0 0.0%
Vehicle 12 6.1% 1 0.6% 10 7.5%
Abandoned building 0 0.0% 0 0.0% 0 0.0%
Total 196 154 134
