KITTITAS COUNTY
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS
PUBLIC WORKS — BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
STUDY SESSION STAFF REPORT
STUDY SESSION DATE: February 11, 2019
TOPIC: Sixteen Foot Driveways
ACTION REQUESTED: Acknowledge Public Works Sixteen Foot Driveways
Pending Adoption of Road Standard Revision
LEAD STAFF:
Mark R. Cook
RECOMMENDATION:
Acknowledge the Public Works (PW) current driveway width requirements remain in
effect pending adoption of revised road standards.
BRIEFING SUMMARY:
• Public Works currently requires driveways to be twelve (12) or sixteen (16 ) feet
wide depending on the length of the driveway
• Current adopted fire code requires driveways to be twenty (20 ) feet wide
• Revised Road Standards are prepared and ready for review
BACKGROUND:
Current Title 12 driveway width requirements are for 12 or 16 feet, depending on the
length of the driveway. The County has adopted the International Fire Code which
stipulates 20 feet of unobstructed width. Ongoing driveway and access permits require
adopted Title 12 requirements of 12 or 16 feet. PW recently completed revisions to Title
12 and initial outreach efforts formulating a citizen review committee resulted in no
applicants.
DISCUSSION:
Recently, a local developer and land use planner have expressed willingness to work with
PW staff and the Fire Marshall's Office reviewing pending changes to Title 12. Once
reviews begin, PW anticipates approximately four months bringing a revision to the
Planning Commission for initial consideration.
FISCAL IMPACTS:
PW has spent approximately $50,000 developing proposed revisions to Title 12.
ATTACHMENTS:
Exhibit 1: Public Works Adopted Driveway Requirements
Exhibit 2: International Fire Code Driveway Requirements
Page 1 of 3
PUBLIC WORKS BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS WORK SESSION STAFF REPORT
