There have been 60 bridges rated as Code 3; this rating reflects bridges with timber railing or no
railing at all. Of all the bridges identified with substandard rail, these bridges or structures have
the highest vulnerability because they provide no protection for an errant vehicle.
3. Clear Zone Inventory
Through the data collection process and analysis of this safety plan, it has been identified that
an inventory of clear zones in Kittitas County would greatly benefit the process for future safety
plans and project proposals. Up to date and accurate data allows the county to better identify
future project locations that support the goal of eliminating fatalities and serious injuries on the
road system. Although it has a lower priority than actual projects, it is a low cost proposal that
could actually aid in the reduction of cost of future projects. This effort would include field data
collection, database creation, and potentially scoping level mitigation opportunities identified.
4. Denmark Road Safety Improvements
Improvement of a sharp corner with steep embankments at MP 3.57 would aid to prevent run-
off -road accidents on this specific road as it has a history of accidents at this location and was
identified on a previous safety plan. The priority level is lower than other projects because it
only targets a specific location and road characteristic. The county included multiple road
segments to provide improvements to this entire roadway corridor, from MP 0.50 to MP 4.35
which includes bundling bridge rail improvements to the project for efficiency and cost effective
contract letting.
S. Huntzinger Road Safety Improvements
a. Phase 1 -MP 2.70 to MP 4.88
b. Phase 2 -MP 5.14 to MP 6.99
c. Phase 3 -MP 6.99 to MP 10.74
Huntzinger Road had several segments of road that scored high on the risk-based prioritization.
Although there is no significant accident data to reflect the hazards, the road characteristics of
the road show several areas of curves; both vertical and horizontal, steep embankments and no
shoulder which are the largest contributing factors to run -off-road accidents. Guardrail, signing
11
