1. Roadside Hazard Safety Improvements
This project provides for safety improvements on 14 different road segments to lessen the
severity of run -off -the -road accidents by installing guardrail where necessary to protect roadside
hazards. Signs such as advanced warning signs and chevrons for roadway curves, upgraded stop
signs at intersections, and other delineation devices will be installed as recommended per
MUTCD requirements to also prevent run -off -the -road accidents. This project is the highest
priority for Kittitas County because it addresses the most common type of accidents on multiple
roadway segments that scored high in the risk-based prioritization. These cost effective
improvements provide benefits to a number of locations, thereby improving the roadway
network County wide.
2. Bridge Rail Improvements -Code 3
a. Phase 1 -County Maintenance Districts A -F
L 19 bridges or structures
b. Phase 2- County Maintenance Districts G -I
L 21 bridges or structures
c. Phase 3- County Maintenance Districts J -L
1. 20 bridges or structures
Due to the large number of locations needing improvement, it is cost prohibitive to provide
improvements for all locations in a single project. Because of this, county -wide bridge rail
improvements will be executed in a number of projects. Each priority will include a number of
locations that are grouped by County Maintenance Districts, and sized to be manageable phases
for design and construction. The projects were then ranked based on the inadequacy of the
bridge rail and then by the location in which the greatest benefit would be achieved.
Although not identified through the risk-based prioritization scoring, this project is a high
priority for Kittitas County due to the number of locations observed to be at high risk with the
potential for high severity accidents throughout the entire county road system. The potential
accidents that this project would prevent are serious injury and fatal accidents. The County has
identified this widespread hazard and is taking a proactive, systemic approach to reduce future
potential accidents.
10
