Management
Housekeeping, like any other business component, needs good management to have any chance of
success. The larger the event, the deeper the management staff should be. Given the restricted
resources of the Kittitas Valley Event Center, it is imperative that we use our resources very efficiently.
Nothing can ruin an event quicker than a failed cleaning plan. We must ensure that our staff not only
has the right equipment, but also has good leadership on the grounds. Therefore we ensure accurate job
descriptions, hire strategically into facility management positions, and provide training for our staff.
Aside from managing our employees, communication is critically important. On a weekly basis, our
entire staff meets to discuss upcoming facility needs and plans together to ensure we are prepared for
upcoming events. In addition, each staff member is issued a two way radio in order to ensure timely
communications.
Making Trash Removal Easier
Trash generated during an event can quickly become problematic. Our policy at the Kittitas Valley Event
Center is to ensure that we have more than adequate trash receptacles available based on the number
of people attending and the type of event. Events with alcohol and food have a greater need than
general meetings. By increasing the number of receptacles we have available during an event, we can
reduce the number of times the cleaning crew must empty them and also limit the potential for
overflowing trashcans to create an unsightly mess.
There are few things more frustrating, not to mention the potential for negative public relations, than
not having the ability to properly dispose of the trash generated during an event.
A Flexible Mindset
No matter how well we plan and execute, one of the certainties in the event business is that anything
can happen. To successfully host events, the maintenance team must have a flexible mindset and a Can-
do attitude. Did the event attract more attendees than anticipated or is it running longer than originally
scheduled? If so, we don't panic; it's all part of dealing with events. We have contingencies in place and
make the best adjustments that we can on the fly and then we debrief and learn our lessons for future
similar events.
The Kittitas Valley Event Center keeps good records which we believe are essential to making informed
staffing decisions, especially since we host some events on a recurring basis or on an annual basis. For
our larger events, like the Kittitas County Fair and Ellensburg Rodeo, our regular personnel are not
sufficient to handle the crowds. In these cases, and occasionally in others, we hire temporary help to
find the type of laborers needed. Experience suggests that not all temporary help will show up for work
and so we typically over hire for these temporary positions to ensure adequate coverage.
Kittitas Valley Event Center Cleaning Action Plan 2017 14 1 P a g e
