KITTITAS COUNTY
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS
PUBLIC WORKS — BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
WORK SESSION STAFF REPORT
WORK SESSION DATE: December 28, 2075
TOPIC: Manastash Bridge Load Limit
ACTION REQUESTED: None Required
LEAD STAFF: Mark R. Cook
RECOMMENDATION:
Informational, none provided.
BACKGROUND:
During a routine bridge inspection earlier this fall, Bridge Inspector Bamford and I
agreed that sufficient deterioration in Upper Manastash Bridge girders mandated
a structural inspection from our on-call structural engineer; Sargent Engineers,
Inc.
We have received the results of that inspection and we are moving forward
setting a load limit for the bridge.
DISCUSSION:
This is the first load limit placed on a Kittitas County NBIS (National Bridge
Inspection System) bridge in some time. We will pursue potential repairs using
the State of Washington Bridge crew as constructors. Providing the bridge can
be rehabilitated, we anticipate removing the load restriction sometime in late
2016. If the girders are not capable of rehabilitation, we will evaluate placing it
on our six-year transportation plan for replacement.
Posting load limit restrictions does provide a level of protection for the County
should the bridge fail under over weight loading. Sargent is suggesting a limit
restriction of: 4 tons per axle, 22 tons gross is appropriate. This load is
essentially 44,000 lbs. Owing to the limit, we advise noticing local pits, concrete
suppliers and building material supply companies of the restriction.
FISCAL IMPACTS:
Minimal costs associated with load limit posting. Potential structural repairs are
unknown at this time.
ATTACHMENTS.
None.
PUBLIC WORKS BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS WORK SESSION STAFF REPORT
