KITTITAS COUNTY
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS
PUBLIC WORKS -- BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
WORK SESSION STAFF REPORT
WORK SESSION DATE: March 14, 2016
TOPIC: Manastash Bridge Update
ACTION REQUESTED: None Required
LEAD STAFF: Mark R. Cook
RECOMMENDATION:
None required — informational only.
BACKGROUND:
Public Works began work replacing the Manastash Bridge in late 2015. The
Board of County Commissioners has been previously briefed on project progress
to date. Recently, Public Works recently suspended construction on the project
owing to improperly cast exterior bridge girders. The girders did not provide
minimum clearance of reinforcing steel supporting the cast in place bridge rail.
Rejection of the substandard girders requires re -casting that is expected to take
several weeks.
DISCUSSION:
Owing to the delay of recasting bridge exterior girders, temporarily suspending
the project minimizes adverse impacts for the contractor's obligation for project
completion within the time allocated in the construction contract. The delay will
likely minimally impact overall project delivery, as paving is not anticipated to
complete until sometime in May 2016. The contractor is not requesting cost
recovery for passible rental bridge impacts at this time.
FISCAL IMPACTS:
None anticipated.
ATTACHMENTS:
None.
PUBLIC WORKS BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS WORK SESSION STAFF REPORT
