March 4, 2019
GENE DANA, SHERIFF
KITTITAS COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE
307 W. Umptanum Rd • Ellensburg, WA 98926
(509) 962-7525 • (509) 674-2584
FAX (509) 962-7599
Board of County Cormnissioners
205 West 5`h Ave.
Ellensburg, WA 98926
Re: Law and Justice Grant funds for special training opportunity
Dear Board of County Commissioners,
The Law and Justice Council annually requests $5,000.00 from Law and Justice Grants funds be
set aside for any special training opportunities that come up during the year that will benefit the
Criminal Justice Agencies.
These training funds are rarely used and were not used last year. This year we have the
opportunity to sponsor some excellent training on "Implicit Bias and Cultural Competence". (See
attached). The cost is $7,500.00 for two separate 100 person workshops that would be held on
May 10`h at CWU. There would be no fee for local agencies to attend and a modest fee for out of
county agencies if there is vacancy.
I attended this workshop along with some of our local police chiefs at the last WASPC
conference and we all highly recommend supporting a local workshop for all of our criminal
justice agencies.
The Law and Justice Council unanimously voted on February 20, 2019 to support a
recommendation to the BOCC for an increase from $5,000.00 to $7,500.00 for training from the
L&J Grant fund balance (which is approximately $114,000.00).
Through this type of training, we will continue to meet or exceed the expectations of the
community that we serve.
Sincerely,
Gene Dana,
Law & Justice Budget Committee
