number of total annual event visitors increases by 22,528 with an increase in overnighters increases by
18,685, generating $2.2m in additional economic benefits and $33,719 of added Lodging Tax revenues.
The methodology used to develop these metrics and projectiom ii as follows:
• Impact of Covered Arena: Assumes season extended by 50% plus expansion of current shows and ability to
attract new users groups including some non-equine events.
• Vllltan: Based on actual count of each horse(rider) using the Horse Parle for a visit (regardless of number of
days of visit) multiplied by 3. Central Washhigton University (CWU) conducted an economic study of over 40
US hone parks in 2006. The study concluded that 3 people (including trainers, grooms, family, spectators,
staff: volwiteers, etc.) attend an event per horse. This is reasonable based on Hone Park experience.
• Vislton residing outside Kittitas County: actual zip code infoxmation collected from users and projected.
• Overnipts during muJtl..day events: based on each event's schedule.
C Day-Uae Vllfton-non-.loal: based on user registration fonns.
• Total vilitors ovemigbt&-non-local: calculated for each event the number of non-local visitors times the
number of nights, then applied the overall % of non-local visiton to the total.
• Visiton overnight-not in paid lodging: An estimated 15% of Horse Park Usc:ni ether use RV hookups or dry
camp. A negligible number stay with friends/family close by. We multiplied 15% to the total number.
• Vuiton overnight-in paid lodgin1: This is the rem.,.ioing 85% of visitors overnight.
• No. Lodging Rooms Booked: Based on user demographics, we estimate that 1.S users occupy a single room.
This is conservative.
• Overall Economic Impact of Visiton: CWU study estimates that an individual spends $136/day for tourist
services; this metric was multiplied by the total number of non~local visitor nights. We applied an even more
conservative assumption of$120/day.
• Number of Jobs Created: CWU estimat.es that for every $1 million of economic impact, 16 jobs are created.
• HoteJ/Motel Spending: approximately 39% of overnight spending is for lodging per Dean Runyan
Washington State Travel Impacts & Visitor Volume 2001-2011
• Lodging Tax Revenues: Total Hotel/Motel spending times 4% lodt, ring: tax rate (2% plus 2%)
Submit the original application to:
Kittitas County Department of Public Works
411 N.
