~ITTITAS COUNTY
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS
through boulders and similar materials. The boring will be advanced until one of the
following criteria is reached: 1) the boring penetrates 10 feet into rock, 2) refusal occurs
within nested boulders, or 3) we reach a depth of 50 feet. If thick soil layers (sand, gravel,
etc.) are encountered, then occasional soil samples will be obtained by driving split-spoon
samplers in accordance with the standard penetration test (SPT) procedure (American
Society for Testing and Materials [ASTM] D 1586).
Hart Crowser will observe the exploration, log the subsurface conditions, collect
representative soil and rock samples, and transport the samples to the laboratory for
further visual evaluation and testing.
The borehole will be backfilled in accordance with Department of Ecology regulations.
The upper 1 foot of the borehole will be patched with gravel surfacing. Excess spoils
from the borehole will be spread on the ground adjacent to the borehole.
Ifrequired, Hart Crowser's subcontractors will provide traffic control services during
drilling.
TASK 3.23 -Sample Review and Laboratory Testing
Soil and rock samples obtained from the explorations will be visually classified in the
field by Hart Crowser and in Hart Crowser's geotechnical laboratory based on the
Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) and ASTM classification methods.
Hart Crowser will conduct a series of geotechnical laboratory tests on selected soil and
bedrock samples obtained from the explorations to evaluate the engineering and index
properties of the site soils. The specific tests conducted will depend upon actual
conditions encountered. For budgeting purposes, Hart Crowser has assumed the tests will
include up to eight moisture content determinations, one Atterberg limits determination,
three grain-size distribution tests, and one unconfined compressive test.
TASK 3.30 -Office Work
TASK 3.31 -Engineering Analysis and Consultations
Hart Crowser will conduct engineering analyses to evaluate seismic hazards, ground
settlement, abutment stability, foundation and retaining wall alternatives and design
parameters, and earthwork guidelines. Engineering analysis will be completed in general
conformance with appropriate Washington State Department of Transportation
(WSDOT) design manuals.
Hart Crowser will consult with the design team regarding their findings and foundation
alternatives.
