Public involvement is key component of the planning efforts to balance recreational opportunities <br />that promote quality of life for local residents and promote economic development through increased <br />recreational tourism in our area . Efforts include decades of work by elected and appointed <br />representatives of the City, local volunteers, non-profit partners, local businesses, and institutions of <br />higher learning. <br />2009, 2010, 2011, & 2014 : Roslyn Downt own As sociation in partnership with the University of <br />W ash i ngton, Depa rtm ent of A rch it ectu re, Design St udio -Storefront Studio Program <br />The Ro slyn Dow ntown Association has held a series of community workshops in partnership with the <br />Univer~lty of Washington's Department of Architectu re to develop conceptual designs and plans for <br />parks, open -space, .and trails. The goa l o f the design proposals were to link and enha nce parks and <br />open-spa ces t o. form a "green heart of Ro slyn", Sto refront Studio is a prog ram lead by Jim Nicholls <br />from the University 0f Washington, Dept. of Archi t ecture to engage students to w ork with small local <br />co mm unities to enact commun ity Involvement an d promote pos i tive change . It provides an opportu nity <br />'fo r students t o gain experience and he lps communities wit h limited resources through visioning and <br />conceptual c!es ign processes , In cluded in t hese wo r kshops were designs for capital projects for parks, <br />t railhea ds, and non -motorized li n kages through ' downtown to parks and open-spaces. <br />HOW WE GOT HERE: DEVelOPING THE NEW TRAIL PLAN <br />The trail plan for the Roslyn Urban Forest w as developed in accordance with the la nd St ewardship Plan <br />(LSP}. The ma.in goals of that Plan are to protect arid enha·nce wildlife habitat and to provid e a quality non- <br />motorized recreational experience that minimizes impacts to wildlife and wildlife habitat. The new t rail plan incorporates info rmatio n received at r eg ular bi-monthly Citize ns Advisory <br />Comm ittee for the Ro slyn Urban Fore st (CAC RUF) meetjngs an d at t he following events : <br />November 16, 2010 : Regional Assessment and Stakeholder Workshop <br />The CAe RU F partnered with The W il de rn ess Society in r eac hing o ut to the commun ity and potential <br />regi o na l sta keholders to discuss and gather informatio n to sha pe t he Rosl yn Urba n Fore st (R UE) Trail and <br />Retreation Plan, identify opport unities to connect the RUF w it h regiona l trail and conse rva tio n co rri do rs, <br />identify collaborative opportunities to fund collective ideas, and foster the conversation about an upper <br />county regional recreational plan. <br />May 17, 2011: Community Vision Workshop <br />9
