STATE OF WASHINGTON
DEPARTMENTOF ECOLOGY
1250 W Alder St •Union Gap,WA 98903-0009 •(509)575-2490
May 5,2016
The Honorable Geoff Scherer
Mayor,City of Roslyn
PO Box 451
Roslyn,WA 98941
Dear Mayor Scherer:
The Washington State Department of Ecology (Ecology)strongly supports the City of Roslyn's
Town to Teanaway project to purchase 160 acres of private property between the Roslyn Urban
Forest (RUF)and the extensive public lands to the north.
The purchase and maintenance of these lands is important to Ecology because better
management of these properties will improve water quality in Crystal Creek and other protected
local waters,as well as protecting key ripatian areas and recreational opportunities within the
RUF.
These properties are located uphill from the RUF.During rainfall or snowmelt events, rapid
runoff from these properties currently erodes trails and damages riparian areas in the RUF,as
well as overwhelming the City of Roslyn stormwater system.
Ownership of these properties would allow the City of Roslyn to:
•Better manage runoff from snowmelt and storms,
•Prevent erosion of the recreational trails in the RUF,
•Protect and improve riparian areas in the RUF,
•Reduce sediment-laden runoff from entering Crystal Creek,
•Improve downstream water quality,and
•Connect the RUF trails to other adjacent trail systems, resulting in multiple economic and
health benefits for the community.
Congratulations to the City ofRoslyn for taking this proactive step to securing funds for the
preservation of the Roslyn Urban Forest and the future of outdoor recreation in Washington
State.
Best of luck and please let us know how we can assist in the future.
Sincerely,
Jane Creech
Water Quality Program e .
