~ROSLYN MARKETSMARKET
PO BOX 509
ato ROSLYN,WA 98941
May 19,2016
Hon.Geoff Scherer
Mayor,City of Roslyn
Box 451
Roslyn,WA 98941
Dear Mayor Scherer:
The Roslyn Farmers Market Board enthusiastically supports the City of Roslyn's project to
purchase 160 acres of private property between the Roslyn Urban Forest and the extensive
public lands to the north.
The Roslyn Farmers Market draws an average of 3,200 visitors during the summer markets with
about 40%coming from over 50 miles away from Roslyn. Our surveys indicate that people
come from King County,Okanogan,Douglas and obviously Kittitas County (and beyond)to
pursue recreation opportunities and tourism within our small community. Many come on
Saturday to enjoy the trails and landscape of the Roslyn Urban Forest.Connecting trail systems
will encourage people to stay longer and increase tourism spending and overnight stays. It will
encourage business health and offer increased opportunities for new businesses associated
with outdoor recreation including restaurants, hotels, gear shops and other affiliated business.
The Town to Teanaway project builds upon the vision to create recreational connectivity
between the communities of Roslyn,Cle Elum,Ronald, and the Suncadia Resort. The current
interruption in public ownership disconnects Roslyn'strail network and surrounding trail
systems including the Coal Mines Trail,Suncadia trail system,Washington State Horse Park
trails, and the John Wayne Trail, from the regional trail systems found on The Nature
Conservancy lands and in the Teanaway Community Forest.
The Roslyn Farmers Market Board strongly supports efforts to secure these lands for business,
conservation, and sustainable community objectives. We also would like to thank the City of
Roslyn for taking this proactive step to securing funds for the future of outdoor recreation in
our County.Best of luck and please let us know how we can assist in the future.
Sincerely,
Ben Flowers
Chair,Roslyn Farmers Market
