As a crucial part of our community's efforts to bolster tourism and enrich our local culture, we are excited to outline the specific goals and priorities of the Consolidated Lodging Tax Committee for the upcoming year. Our committee is dedicated to supporting events that not only draw visitors to our community but also contribute to its long-term vitality and prosperity. To this end, we are particularly focused on the following criteria for 2026: Off-Season Events: We are eager to fund events that take place during off-peak times, as these have the potential to stimulate economic activity during typically slower periods. Priority will be given to proposals for new events that diversify our community's offerings and attract visitors throughout the year. Uniqueness of Event: We seek events that stand out for their originality, creativity, and distinctiveness. Whether through innovative programming, cultural significance, or immersive experiences, we are interested in supporting events that capture the imagination and leave a lasting impression on attendees. Community Support and Strategic Alignment: It is essential that funded events have a tangible impact on the community in which they are held and align with its strategic goals. We encourage applicants to demonstrate how their event will contribute to local businesses, promote cultural exchange, or enhance community well-being, among other objectives. Emphasis on Tourism from Outside the 50-Mile Radius: Proposals should outline strategies for marketing and outreach to attract visitors from neighboring regions and beyond, thereby maximizing the economic and cultural benefits of the event. (RCW 67.28.1816) We believe that by prioritizing these criteria, we can support events that not only drive tourism but also foster community engagement, stimulate economic growth, and showcase the unique identity of Kittitas County. We encourage all interested applicants to carefully review the guidelines and criteria outlined in the application materials and to submit proposals that align closely with our goals and priorities. (ATFS!) is a community-focused organization that produces inclusive outdoor sporting events such as fun runs, trail races, and themed walking/running events. Our mission is to make fitness fun, accessible, and tourism-friendly by combining recreational sports with vibrant local culture. This proposal requests support for the Palouse to Cascades Marathon+ Relay, a new event that brings together athletes, families, and visitors for an outdoor adventure in Kittitas County. Response 2.1: Why would tourists travel to Kittitas County to attend your event/activity/facility?* The Palouse to Cascades Marathon+ Relay will highlight Kittitas County's unique natural landscapes and small-town charm, positioning the region as a year-round destination for outdoor recreation. Marketing will include cross-promotion of other county attractions (e.g., hiking, local festivals, museums, breweries, and lodging). Events of this relay style attract runners from all over the United States. Examples such as the Hood to Coast Relay, from Mt. Hood to Seaside, Oregon, is known as the largest running/walking relay in the world with 12, 600 runners and 19, 000 total participants. The Ragnar Relay for Mt. Rainier attracted 2,000 registrants competing as 269 teams. The Rainier to Ruston Relay runs from Mt. Rainier to Point Ruston (Tacoma) and had over 1,200 participants. These similar style events attract thousands of participants, support teams and friends and family. According to the article “The Rise of the Relay Marathon” in the Financial Times, “Long-distance relay races around the world are surging in popularity. Established events, such as Hood to Coast in Oregon, are seeing peaking demand from international teams, while newer races are on an upwards trajectory.” The article continues saying, “Relays are the perfect Venn diagram of fitness trends: a mix of ultra-marathoning, trail running and the great outdoors.” What these events have in common and our goal for the Palouse to Cascades Marathon+ Relay is that they are time honored traditions and continue to grow in popularity. Many of these relays encourage friendly competition among communities and professional organizations. We strive to foster that same spirit. 2500 character limit 3| Impact Response 3: Describe how you will promote your event/activity/facility to attract tourists.* 4| Collaboration Response 4.1: If your organization collaborates or has created partnerships with other organizations, groups, or other events, how is this accomplished?* Response 4.2: Describe how you will promote lodging establishments, restaurants, and business located in Kittitas County * Response 4.3: Is there a host hotel for your event or grant project? If yes, list the hotel.* 5| Future Plans Response 2.2: Describe the prior success of your event/activity/facility to attract tourists.* We anticipate at least 80% of registered participants traveling from beyond 50 miles, including runners from Seattle, Tacoma, Spokane, Oregon, and Idaho. Overnight lodging is expected for 150 stays. AFTS has successfully held running events in Western Washington for the past 10 years. Our events continually attract participants from more than 50 miles away. For example, our 2023 Beach to Chowder 10K/5K event had 118 participants from 63 different Zip Codes, 61 of which were 50 miles or more away from the location of the event. In addition, many of the runners who participate in our events have run similar relays and are excited about coming to Kittitas County to run on the Palouse to Cascades Trail. 2500 character limit Application Questions: Part 2 ATFS will work with the Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce to identify local hotels, restaurants and shops with whom to partner for The Palouse to Cascades Marathon+ Relay. Below are testimonials from runners who have participated in the type of relays similar to our Palouse to Cascades Marathon+ Relay: I’ve been running for over 14 years and have participated in a wide range of races, including 5Ks, 10Ks, half-marathons, and marathons. Some of my most memorable experiences have come from the eight relay races I’ve completed—each covering over 200 miles, like Ragnar and Hood to Coast. For each race, I’ve traveled more than 50 miles, staying in local hotels and enjoying nearby restaurants, breweries, and shops, which adds to the fun and community feel of the event. Relay races are hands-down my favorite type of race. The teamwork, adventure, and shared excitement make them truly special. While my full marathon days are behind me, I would absolutely love to participate in a marathon relay and am excited about the possibility of this new race! -Heather Schiller, Insurance Professional I’ve run a variety of races over the years, but the four relay races I’ve done (Ragnar) have been the most fun. Each one involved traveling over 50 miles, staying in local hotels, and enjoying the area's restaurants and breweries with our team. Relay races offer a great mix of challenge and camaraderie. The team atmosphere, overnight running, and shared experience make them unforgettable. I’m excited about the idea of a marathon relay—it’s a perfect way to stay active and competitive without the grind of a full marathon. -Jeff Schiller, Electrician As a long-time distance runner, I have participated in multiple relay races over the last twenty years. I’ve traveled to California, Southern and Central Oregon, and various places around Washington to participate in these races. I would be willing to travel further to participate. There is usually high demand to secure a spot for our team and the races routinely sell out. They seem to generate extra revenue for local businesses in the community. The community members usually embrace the event and come out to support the runners. Relay races have a great, fun atmosphere. -Susan Roberts, Endodontist Every relay I have participated in is one that I have had to travel to. It turns the race into a weekend away for friends.
