The museum opened in 20'15 and is in Upper Kittitas County, just prior to the border of King County on Snoqualmie Pass. WSSSM is located at the modern Pass Life development next to the Summit ski area, ideally situated in between two popular venues: Commonwealth restaurant and Dru Bru brewery. WSSSM is open year-round, Friday-Sunday. Admission is FREE. WSSSM Board of Directors: . Dave Moffett, Founder & President, former Owner of The Summit at Snoqualmie . Kirby Gilbert, Vice President & Ski Historian . Leeds Chamberlain, Secretary, Museologist, specialist in teaching women to ski . Deb Armstrong, Ski lnstructor & Coach and Olympic Gold Medal Winner . John Forsen, Video/Movie Producer & Director, and life-long skier . Christie King, WSSSM volunteer & marketing expert . Guy Lawrence, General Manager, The Summit at Snoqualmie . John W. Lundin, Ski Historian, and author of "Early Skiing on Snoqualmie Pass" and "Ski Jumping in Washington State". . Lowell Skoog, Ski Mountaineering Expert and author of "Written in the Snows" . John Sutherland, WSSSM volunteer & ski and resort industry veteran . Hu and Dollie Armstrong, Co-Founders & Emeritus Board Members As a non-profit, WSSSM has developed broad and consistent support from over 350 individual and corporate donors across the state, including The Summit at Snoqualmie, Northwest Winter Sports Foundation, SkiWashington, K2, Mervin, and more. WSSSM is a storytelling, digital hands-on museum with 11 permanent exhibits. ln 2022,ihe museum launched a new Snowboarding Exhibit and original film! Our most popular exhibit is on our State's Olympians. Each exhibit includes video components. The museum is staffed by one paid employee who manages our operations and volunteers. WSSSM is a community space. Our volunteer hosts are tourism promotion partners for the county as they provide guided information for our visitors. lf awarded, WSSSM would use the Lodging Tax funds to support these primary areas in 2023. 1 . Location: Located on Snoqualmie Pass, just t hour from Seattle, WSSSM is the Northern Gateway Entrance to Kittitas County and the first stop on the Central WA Outdoor Experience. WSSSM is located just off l-90, on busy route 906, across the street from the Chevron and The Summit lnn in The Pass Life development between two busy locations: the Commonwealth restaurant and Dru Bru Brewery. 2022 visilor records indicate that the museum is most busy when the restaurant and brewery are also busy. 2. Year-round destination. The main winter attraction on Snoqualmie Pass is skiing and snowboarding and The Summit at Snoqualmie draws over a half million visitors per year. Outdoor recreation in the summer, spring and fall makes the area year-round tourist destination. Summer and Winter are the busiest seasons. 3. Passion for Ski Culture: Because we are a newer facility opened in 2015, the museum was created as a storytelling, interactive museum with extremely modern design esthetics. Monitors throughout enhance the experience of each exhibit. Kids and adults alike love to push the button to activate the enormous rope tow that resides in the museum's rafters. Because we are a smaller museum, each visit is really a personal tour by a museum volunteer who will cater to each visitor's interests. Our volunteer hosts services as guides to WSSSM, but also field many questions about the surrounding area and help to promote other local businesses and activities! WSSSM has a unique proposition with little competition in the immediate area. lf a visitor is looking for a cultural or historical experience on Snoqualmie Pass, WSSSM is the place. New in 2022, the museum promoted scavenger hunts (4 levels now!) at the museum for kids with cool prizes. The Snowboarding Exhibit and original film is drawing lots of new interest! 4. Museum Events: WSSSM offers many events throughout the year from book talks to partnership events to educational and safety events. Each event draws from 20-200 people. 5. Community and Event Space: WSSSM is an ideal event space with high ceilings, concrete flooring, technical amenities and great views. Organizations like Edgeworks (using museum for multiple days per week in the winter for winter mountaineering classes), community meetings (for local non-profits and elected officials), birthday parties (an apres ski party for a 90 year-old!), and other private groups and individuals have utilized the museum for their own events and meetings. 2500 character limit lf-app-16-03.co.kittitas.wa.us/Forms/form/submission/history/77659/85470?hideHeader=true 6/1 S 9129122, 10:40 AM Response 2.2* Application Questions: Part 2 l-lAC Clerk Review Describe the prior success of your evenUactivity/facility in attraction tourists. From 20'1 5-2020, regular weekend visitors and special larger in person events were regular happenings at the museum. Over Covid, we pivoted to very successful online/zoom/Facebook Live events and covid safe visitors. With zoom fatigue in 2022, not everyone was ready to attend larger in-person events. So, therefore WSSSM focused on smaller, more intimate gatherings and being a partner in larger outdoor events. WSSSM worked closed with Dru Bru on many of their larger community events that were held outside and had parties in the parking lot with the museum open and ready for increased guests! Museum volunteers participated in helping with these events. , Fall2021. We also partner with other location organizations to promote these events through Facebook groups. As a member of CAMAH (Kathy McDonald is 2022 CAMAH President and webmaster), WSSSM will utilize our contacts in Kittitas County to cross-promote activities and events with other museums and organizations. The WSSSM website has a specific section on it highlighting local "partners" in the community. The Central WA Outdoor logo is prominently featured on the www.wsssm.org home page. 2500 character limit 4.3 Host Hotel*ls there a host hotel for your event or grant project? WSSSM has a small operating budget, and it was determined that we could sustain our budget and growth without applying for multiple grants. From 2015-2020, WSSSM's annual advertising budget was very limited and was comprised mostly of freeway exit signage, large museum logo signage on route 906, and other flag signage stationed directly in front of the museum. We invested in aprofessional booth to take to events (Warren Miller, Ski Bonkers, others) and in giveaways for visitors including pens, stickers, notecards, gift tags, and more. We also spent time (but not a lot of money) revamping our website and expanding WSSSM social media presence. We would use flyers, email e-blasts and mailed postcards (to our own list) to promote our events. We also relied heavily on our partners and social media to promote the museum and our events. ln 2021 and 2022, with the help of Lodging Tax Funds, we were able to add targeted paid print and online advertising to the mix and saw great success in visitor numbers going back to pre-pandemic levels in the summer of 2021 as a result. With increased visitor in 2022 and a major revamp of our gift shop, retails sales more than doubled in 2022 to our highest level ever. ln 2023, we will promote our new Snowboarding Exhibit and events and content expanding this topic. General marketing programs help to sustain visitors to the museum which sustain our revenue stream. The majority of our revenue comes from fundraising. We do not apply for many grants outside of lodging tax funds. Sustained advertising is crucial toward helping the museum to have sustained weekend traffic and special events which help make Snoqualmie Pass a place to stay for the weekend and not just a day trip thereby increasing lodging overnight stays. WSSSM is one of the few cultural/historical activities on Snoqualmie Pass for visitors. Advertising = more awareness of the museum and our events = more visitors = more supporters = more sales, etc. The Lodging Tax funds are crucial part of our tourism marketing strategy for this young non-profit facility. 2500 character limit Application Questions: Part 4 6l Additional lnformation Provide any additional information which will assist the Lodging Tax Advisory Committee in evaluating your project and its benefit to tourism. lf-app-16-03.co.kittitas.wa.us/Forms/form/submission/history/77659/85470?hideHeader=true 1'U19 9129122, 10;40 AM LTAC Clerk Review Additional lnformation Thank you so much for reading WSSSM's application for the 2023 Kittitas County Lodging Tax Grant. We recognize that this is a lengthy process for committee members, and we appreciate your time and energy to consider our application. WSSSM worked hard in 2021 and 2022 to be good stewards of the Lodging Tax Funds. By partnering with Craters of the Moon, our advertising was done creatively and professionally AND at minimal cost! As the Marketing Director for the museum, l, Kathy McDonald, bring more than 25 years of marketing expertise to our organization. I look forward to partnering with others in the county to raise awareness and create tourism events and opportunities for both WSSSM and others in the county. I have gotten much more involved in CAMAH this year as Presidentlor 2022, creating a new logo, website and overseeing the group's name change. As WSSSM enters its 8th year of operation in 2023, we are super excited about 3 things. 1. NEW Snowboarding Exhibit and Film: We are excited for the events and promotion around this new exhibit. More expanded content to come on Snowboarding at WSSSM. 2. ln Person Events/NEW Partnerships: Bring back the events and we're excited to be partnering with Suncadia Resort to promote historical and arts tourism at WSSSM and throughout the county. 3. Continued Online Adveftising: Nothing showcases our museum like video can. Should we be awarded Lodging Tax Grant Funds, we are especially interested in OTTiStreamed Media and Television Advertising. We are grateful to have been awarded a grant in 2021 and 2022 and hope to earn your trust again in 2023. We know that the museum is unique in being one of the only facilities to provide culture and tourism drawing events in the Upper part of the County. We hope that you enjoy our video presentation, and we look forward to meeting with you and answering your questions. Thank you. NEW this year in 2022, WSSSM took advantage of QR codes being more popular and has asked each visitor to fill out a "Visitor Survey" which asks zip code and overnight stay info. This Representative Survey provided incredible information for us', 12o/o of visitors are staying overnight in a hotel or Air B n B and another 60/o a,ta staying overnight in a private home. Previous surveys had indicated 5% of guests were staying overnight. Survey data also indicates that97% of visitors are from outside Kittitas County. Previous estimates were that 90% were from outside the county. Survey data indicates that 16% of visitors are from outside Washington State. Being a small museum, WSSSM hosts welcome each and every guest into the museum and have a chance to chat and say hello. Volunteers are trained to count each and every guest and are now asking zip code and if and where the person has stayed overnight and what locations. Attached is the QR code Visitor Survey and the WSSSM Operations Checklist form that is used by our volunteers to track information about visitors. We will also work with Suncadia, our new host hotel, to obtain detailed information on heads in beds as a result of our in-person events for 2023. The past actual used in this report are number from 2019, the last full year WSSSM was open. The attached report shows details of our visitor survey: ,2022 visitors are projected to be 5,500 or close to 2019 levels. We are currently open 3 days per week (1 55 days per year) and in 2019 we were open 4 days per week (208 days). Our average number of visitors per day has gone from 29 in 2019 to 36 in 2022. . Projections for 2023 are up to 6,200 with a projected increase in visitors per day to 40 and guest accommodation levels increased to 12oh from 5%. About 160/o are projected to come from outside Washington State. 2500 character limit Application Questions: Part 5 8l Funding Does your organization have, or have you applied for, grant funding from other sources? lf not, why not? lf yes, please list the funding you have for the project, including any volunteer and in-kind sources in Question 9l Project Budget Overview. Yes ;, No lf not, why not? WSSSM has funding to sustain our operations and staff and current events, but we do not have extra money for an annual marketing campaign of this size. lf WSSSM is not awarded a Kittitas Lodging Tax Grant, we will not engage in a large paid general marketing campaign in2023. We may engage in a very small paid social media campaign if we have an extra good fundraising season this holiday. We hope that as fundraising levels increase, we are able to sustain operation levels and find budget for general marketing. 2022 budget was impacted with new Snowboarding exhibit 2500 character limit 518.75 This field will auto fill with the correct percentage based on your input to budget section below For any claimed in-kind contributions valued at $500 or more and related to marketing/advertising, you must submit verifiTing documentation which assures the contribution will be provided. 9l Project Budget Overview Please complete budget for this projecVproposal. lf your agency operates independently of this project application it may not be necessary to submit the entire agency budget.
