MerGeo was founded in 2004, and in recent years has put on about 50 events per year, ranging from 4-kilometer trail runs in urban parks to SO-kilometer ultra runs and 24-hour navigation races over large areas ofrugged terrain. Onsite Contacts Eric Bone, owner and course designer, 206-291,-8250 M icha e I Havrda, Vo I u ntee r Coord i nato r, 425-269-8442 Angela Cline, Event Director; 910-548-4943 Description of Use This event includes a trail run on Saturday, June 3, and a navigation event on Sunday, June 4. The trail run will offer a choice of four distances, 5km, 7 miles, half marathon (13 miles), and 50km (31 miles), and we expect approximately 150 participants to attend. The navigation event will offer two time limits, 3 hours and 6 hours, and participants will travel on foot individually or in teams of 2-5 people to visit as many checkpoints as they can within their chosen time limit. We expect approximately 35 participants to take part in the navigation event. Trail run routes will be clearly marked with flags, ,ribbons, and cones; navigation checkpoints will be marked with orange and white flags. All markings will be removed immediately following the event, and any trash will be picked up by MerGeo staff and deposited at the Ellensburg Transfer Station. Participants will adhere to leave-no-trace practices. Safetv and First Aid We have a clearly marked first aid station. Our standard safety procedures include tracking the whereabouts of all runners while they are on-course, as well as implementing search and first aid procedures in case of a runner that is thought likely to be lost or injured. We will notify emergency first responders of the event in the week leading up to the event. ln the very rare event of a medical emergency at one of our events, we call emergency first responders and coordinate teams on the ground to render first aid to and/or evacuate (when appropriate) the sick or injured individual and to guide the first responders to the location of the person in distress as soon as possible. Parkins and Public Roads We plan to park participants, staff, and volunteers along the north side of Umptanum Road, in the vicinity of 13800 Umptanum Road. This is an area that sees some parking already by recreational users of the trails. The road is wide along this stretch, so there will be ample room for two-way traffic. Event staff will manage and direct parking to ensure efficient use of space, to leave lanes open for two-way traffic, including any emergency and official vehicles, and to avoid damage to the road shoulder or adjacent vegetation. Participants will be notified of the parking directions and to follow staff directions in pre-event information. The road will remain open and available for normal use, and thus no closure, traftic control, or detour will be needed. Sanitation We will arrange for portable toilets in adequate number (1 toilet per gender per 100 attendees, plus one extra). These facilities will be located near to the parking, check-in, and finish location, within a 100-foot walk of the check-in and finish. They will be sited on already impacted ground in order to protect vegetation around the trailhead. Proposed schedule Date Action Saturday, May 6 Placement of signs at trailheads notifying other uses about the event. Emergency first responders will be notified of the event, and provided with the address of the event. A staff member will remain within city limits until Monday in order to be able to dispose of garbage and recycling at the transfer center and not carry it across the county line. lnsura nce We can meet the insurance requirements for a certificate and endorsement naming Kittitas County Penal Bond We request that we be relieved of this requirement, since our use is low impact and is not anticipated to have any impact on County property. We have never caused or been asked by a property owner to pay for any similar damages at any of our past events. lf this waiver cannot be granted or would be an obstacle to promptly moving forward with the permit, then we will happily make the deposit. 1) Event on WDFW controlled lands All routes make use of Wildlife Area trails.
