Response 1: ProjecUEvent Description * The Roslyn Ronald Cle Elum Hentage Club's project is to create a yearlong advertising campaign utilizing the idea of Cultural Tourism or Heritage Tourism io link together the cultural assets and treasures located in Roslyn, Ronald & Cle Elum. The National Trust for Historic Preservation defines Heritage Tourism as traveling to experience the places, artifacts, and activities that authentically represent the stories and people of the past and present. Cultural Tourism not only brings in revenue it also raises awareness and celebrates the distinct culture of our community. Our Mission Statement provides guidance to our project: "To preserve and maintain the Coal Miners' Memorial and give voice to the proper and rightful protection and preservation of our historic cemeteries." We oversee and maintain the Roslyn Cemetery as well as the Coal Miners' Memorial which is prominently located in downtown Roslyn- "To preserve, nremorialize and communicate our community's rich ethnic and cultural history to citizens and visitors." With the influx of visitors and new community members we have the opportunity to create an experience for them to learn and pa'ticipate in the unique cultural heritage of our area. "To employ cultural activities that honor and celebrate our community's heritage." We host several cultural events throughout the year including guest speakers that share stories pedaining to ihe history of our area. A yearlong advertisrng campaign will take advantage of the tourists that already come to our area as well as expanding our reach outside of Kittitas County to attract nrore visitors, building upon what assets and events we already have. Even though we scaled back our events in 2021 we were able to still attract visitors from outsrde Kittitas County. During Memorial Day weekend we held two dedication ceremonies. On Saturday morning we held a dedication ceremony for the ltalian Monument that was erected in the Silvro Pellico Cemetery. ln the afternoon we dedicated the new Kiosk structure and inieractive digital kiosk computer. Both these events were supposed to take place in 2A20 but were postponed and scaled back due to Covid. Despite the restrictions both events were well attended and provided us with valuable feedback via a visitors log that we had set out on Friday and Saturday. Capturing information was one of the things we learned about after going through this application process last year. The data we gathered from our guest book that we had out during only two of the four days of Memorial Day weekend proved to us what we already suspected, 57ok were from out of the county and 19% were visitors that paid for local lodging. The visitors that came the furthest were a family of 8 from Richfield, Wisconsin. Another very interesting statistlc is that 37% of the visitors that signed our guest log didn't have family mentbers buried in the Roslyn Cemetery. The largest cultural celebration we hold is the Croatian Picnic which is held the 3rd Saturday in July. No need to be Croatian, many people enjoy becoming Croatian for the day by adding an "itch" to their last name. This is a celebration of the largest cultural group to immigrate to our area. This is a farnily friendly event that attracts people from all over the country and even the world. This year we saw record aitendance with an estimate of 450-500 people (usually we have between 350-400). At the entry gate we asked people to fill out a survey that we used to draw names and award door prizes for participation. Even though we were overwhelmed at the entry gate and didn't capture as many people to fill out the survey as we planned, we still had 11 9 completed surveys to gather data from. 2500 character lisrit Application Questions'. Our group of volunteers have a broad reach and are deeply involved with our community which allows us to establish long lastrng relationships. Networking also has served as a means to collaborate with organizations outside of our county. lrrvolvement with the Roslyn Cenretery has also provided us with an opportunity io network, collaborate and partner with several organizations located outside of Kittitas County. Virtual meetings during Covid have provided us avenues of meeting people from the Black Heritage Society of Washington, Newcastle Cemetery & Hisiorical Society, King County Historic Preservation Landmarks Commission. Museum of History & Industry, and the Association of King County Htstorical Organizations. We have also increased and strengthened our partnership with Central Washington University, utilizing their students and faculty to assist us with Ground Penetrating Radar, mapping, and online research. We will explore ideas on how to attract visitors during off peak times by collaborating with other local treasures such as the Roslyn Museum, Carpenter Museum, and Telephone Museum. All our events planned in 2020 were canceled. ln 2021 we scaled back our events and focused on those that are held outdoors. The two dedication ceremonies that were held Memorial Day weekend in the Roslyn Cemetery were able io be held because they were outside. We had planned a weekend fllled with other events including a large indoor gathering to include dinner. music and dancing but scaled back due to Covid. The same held true for our events typicatly held as part of Roslyn's Coal Miner's Festival during Labor Day weekend. Only the outdoor King Coal Ceremony was held. forgoing the dinner. music, and dancing event that typically occurs that weekend. We were also able to safely hold our Croatian Picnic event this year since it is held outdoors. For that event we increased the boundaries so people could have more room to spread out. The Liquor Control Board held our application until about 2 weeks before the event as their employees were working virtually. The process was also held up since they would only check their mail a couple times a week. We applied for the Liquor Control Board's Outdoor All Ages event permit to increase the physical boundaries to allow for social disiancing. Since the LCB employees were working virtually from their homes this held up the permitting process. Because it was a state agency, ilrey were holding all applications and not reviewing or processing them until the beginning of July. That was very frustrating and stressful. 2500 char:cter lirvril Additional lnformation We received $1,366.87 in LTAC funding in 2021 lot our Dedication Ceremony in the Roslyn Cemetery held during Memorial Day weekend. Creating a yearlong campaign and outreach program is a new project. We are using our cultural assels and events as a foundation to build upon and create a larger outreach. Using data from our two largest events in 2021 we are able to provide realistic numbers and projections. We have combined the data for both the Memorial Day Dedication Ceremonies at the Roslyn Cemetery and the Croatian Picnic. The numbers above are based on compiling our data from our activities during 2021 (so far). They are combining data that we have and also using estimates. A chart has been provided to illustrate our projections. The Roslyn Cemetery is our largest draw throughout the year. We are adding both a digital guest book on our digital kiosk as well as a physical guest book for people to fill out when visiting the cemetery. These will assist us in capturing a more accurate account of the number of visitors and where they kavel from. We will also ask if they are staying in local paid lodging. At our events such as the Croatian Picnic we will continue to offer surveys using door prizes 1o entice people io fill them out. We will also improve our data by coming up with a beiter way to do a direct count of attendees. We have sign in sheeis to track visitors at our meetings where guest speakers are presenting. 2500 character lirnit Application Questions: Part 5 8l Funding Does your organization have, or have you applied for grant funding from other sources? lf not, why not? lf yes, please list the funding you have for the project, including any volunteer and in-kind sources in Question 9l Project Budget Overview.
