The Memorial Day Celebration is in its thirty-first year, it occurs on the Saturday of first three-day holiday of the year and has become an event that brings visitors and tourists to this small community. lt is a day that ihe community of Easton triples in size as the celebration offers not only a unigue and fun parade, but a car show street faiq a KidZone and time to celebrate our Nalion. Memorial Day is statistically the highest traffic volume of the year. According to the WSDOT Geoportal Map. l-90 has anywhere from 40,000 to 80.000 vehicles on a daily average traveling over Snoqualmie Pass. Coming from the west, visitors enter Kittitas County at the top of Snoqualmie Pass and Easton is the first town in Eastern Washington for visitors. Surrounded by State and Federal campgrounds, private recreational lodging, Memorial Day weekend is one of busiest for overnight stays. Only one hour from Seattle, day trips to hike, bike, fish, and multiple other recreational experiences can be accessed at Easton. Those who are traveling from the east, find that Easton is an easy location to travel to visit for a day, and celebrate the three day weekend. The Memorial Day Celebration offers additional incentive for visitors to stay overnight at one of the many campgrounds and private lodging facilities offered close by. 2500 characie'r linil Response 2.2*Desc, ibe lhe ptior s$ccess ol yortr eve|Uactivitytfacility t1 atractioI tourjsls. When the Easton Memorial Day Celebration began, thirty-one years ago jn 1991, the event was primarily local people having fun and gathering to hold a parade in celebration of Memorial Day. lt provided an opportunity for community members to gather, enjoy each other and to remember those who fought for our Nation. As the event became more popular. and more volunteers came on board to plan. the event became a daylong celebration. The celebration increased from offering a parade to adding a street fair, car shoq motorcycle show and KidZone. Seeing the opporiunity to provide a unique event in a very small town, the committee began to look for more ways to market and promote the celebration. With the help of Kittitas CLTAC grant funds the committee additional marketing options to help spread the work about the Memorial Day Celebration. Using paid advertising. online marketing. printed posters and flyers that were dislributed widely, we saw out small local event growing into a popular event which began drawing more and more people 50 miles or fariher away. ln 2019, we had our largest participation, 4,000 people! Our small-town community event has become a small-town celebration to pui on your calendar and aitend. 2500 ciraracler li$i1 Application Q uestions'. ? art. 2 3l lmpact Response 3: Measuring Results* Describe ho\a you !,/ill promole yoUr eventiactivilytfacility to altracl lourists. We print small postcards that are distributed event to lodging locations so that their guests are given them when they check-in. lnformation on the Easton Memorial Day Celebration is posted on Discover Cle Elum. Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce, Easton School District, Easion Fire Department, and multiple Facebook pages. This has provided a tremendous amount of free promotion. We plan to continue with these partnerships and look for additional ones that can help promote to a larger audience. This year through a generous donation, we will be able to update our website and make it more interactive to visitors. For thirty-one years our event materials have been either hand made or designed by committee members using limited knowledge. This year we are updating our publiciiy by adding additional funds jn our Memorial Day Celebration budget to receive help with our publicity and event promotion. lt ts time for us to identify and adopt some new or expanded ways in which we can promote this wonderful celebration_ We recognize that in ihe two years since our event has occurred, there ate new tips and ways to atttact visitors and tourists. A lot of these changes align to online ntarketing and social media tools, sueh as geofencing, lnstagram, paid advertising. The commiitee is made up of community members and those who represent the Easton Fire Department, Easton School District, local organizations and businesses in Easton. Many of our partners provide important components of the day's celebration. As an example, the Cabin Creek Cruisers host the car show. the lron Freedom Motorcycle Club host the motorcycle show, the Snomads snowmobile club host the beer garden. Our partnership wiih the Easton School enables us to use their parking lot for the KidZone which is one of our most popular activities during the day of celebrating. Our publicity partners include the North Kittitas County Tribune who provide a partial donation of our ads, Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce for iheir supporl of advertising the celebraiion. 2500 characler limil 4.2 Promoiing Local Business* Desctibe how you v/ill promote lodging establislrnrents. restaurants, and bilsiness localed in Kiltilas County Our new website will continue to provide business directory for lodging, food. and services. Offering this update mode of search off of our websiie ties the Memorial Day Celebration directly to resources a traveler might utilize. We will coniinue to add sponsors and donors to our website to help promote iheir business. Easton has several campgrounds; State, Federal and private which will also be added to our website. We are in the process of identifying B&B's, VRBO's. and Airbnb's that might like lo have additional exposure through our website. As we become more familiar with posting on FB and lnstagram, we will have the ability to tag and / or promote our lodging facilities. We've found that lodging facilities and our businesses like having the postcards. or smal! cards on our event. We will continue to use those and rnclude a eR code that links back io our website and the lodging resources we have available. We have found that people like to look at our YouTube on the parade. see a list of parade pafiicipants and Street Fair vendors. Each year we have been able to increase our sponsorship, we obtained a gambling license to sell more raffle tickets and ask for donations to support ihe costs of the celebration. We work hard lo seek additional funding to not only support this impofiant event. but to meet the rising costs associated with hosting events- For example. this year our budget includes additional costs associated with COVID to ensure we are offering a safe celebration. We will work hard to increase sales of our successful raffles that we hold and seeking sponsors and donors in support of the celebration. We are also seeking additional funding from different sources such as the Suncadia Fund for Enhancement. Our committee works hard to identify additional ways to cover the expenses that are incurred for the Memorial Day Celebration. We now have a gamblinq license which will enable us to do additional raffles throughout the year. 2500 charact-.r liqrit Application Questions: Part 4 6l Additional lnformation Provide any additional information which will assist the Lodging Tax Advisory Committee in evaluating your project and its benefit to tourism. As we work to plan a "normal" celebration, we are keeping our minds open to the potential of needing to adapt should there be restriction due to health concerns.
