Response 1: ProjecUEvent Description * The Roslyn Ronald Cle Elum Heritage Club's project is to create a yearlong advertising campaign utilizing the idea of Cultural Tourism or Heritage Tourism to link together the cultural assets and treasures located in Roslyn, Ronald & Cle Elum. The National Trust for Historic Preservation defines Heritage Tourism as traveling to experience the places, artifacts, and activities that authentically represent the stories and peopie of the past and present. Cultural Tourism not only brings in revenue it also raises awareness and celebrates the distinct culture of our community. Our Mission Statemeni provides guidance to our project: "To preserve and maintain the Coal Miners' Memorial and give voice to the proper and rightful protection and preservation of our historic cemeteries." We oversee and maintain the Roslyn Cemetery as well as the Coal Miners' Memorial which is prominently located in downtown Roslyn. "To preserve. memorialize and communicate our community's rich ethnic and cultural history to citizens and visitors." With the influx of visitors anci new community members we have the opportunity to create an experience for them to learn and participate in the unique cultural heritage of our area. "To employ cultural aciivities that honor and celebrate our community's heritage." We host several cultural events throughout the year including guest speakers that share stories pertaining to the history of our area. A yearlong advertising campaign will take advantage of the tourists that already come lo our area as well as expanding our reach outside of Kittitas County to aitract nrore visitors, building upon what assets and events we already have. Cultural tourism helps preserve and promote the unique cultural aspects of a place, preventing them from being forgotten or forever lost. lt helps preserve our local culture while allowing our communities to emphasize the uniqueness and to differentiate it from other locations. We think this is one of the reasons people are so attracted to Roslyn and its' funkiness. We have the means of attracting visitors through our cultural sites and evenls. The Roslyn Cemetery and Coal Miners' Memorial provide the community and visitors an opportuniiy to rediscover the achievements and hard ships of our ancestors. They provide a connection to our past. Even though we scaled back our events in 2021 we were able to still attract visitors from outside Kittitas county. During Memorial Day weekend we held two dedication ceremonies. On Saturday morning we held a dedication ceremony for the ltalian Monument that was erected in the Silvio Pellico Cemetery. ln the afternoon we dedicated the new Kiosk structure and interactive digital kiosk computer. Both these events were supposed to take place in 2020 but were postponed and scaled back due to Covid. Despjte the restrictions both events were well attended and provided us with valuable feedback vra a visitors log that we had set out on Friday and Saturday. Capturing information was one of the things we learned about after going through this application process last year. The data we gathered from our guest book that we had out during only two of the four days of Memorial Day weekend proved to us whai we already suspected, 57o/o were from out of the couniy and 1 g% were visitors that paid for local lodging. The visitors that came the furthest were a family of g from Richfield, wisconsin. Another very interesting statistic is that 37% of the visitors that signed our guesi log didn't have family members buried in the Roslyn Cemetery. The largest cultural celebration we hold is the croatian picnic which is held the 3rd Saturday in July. No need to be Croatian, many people enjoy becoming Croatian for ihe day by adding an "ilch" to their last name. This is a celebration of the largest cultural group to immigrate to our area. This is a farnily friendly event that attracts people from all over the country and even the world. This year we saw record attendance with an estimate of 450-500 people (usually we have between 350-400). At the entry gate we asked people to fill out a survey that we used to draw names and award door prizes for participation. Even though we were overwhelnred at the entry gate and didn't capiure as many people to fill out the survey as we planned, we still had 119 completed surveys to gather data from. 2500 characler lilltit Application Questions: Part 2 3l lmpact Response 3: Measuring Results* Describe holv you will protrtole your evenUactivttytacilily to akracl lourisls. Virtual meetings during Covid have provided us avenues of meeting people from the Black Heritage Society of Washington, Newcastle Cemetery & Historical Society, King County Historic Preservation Landmarks Commission. Museum of History & lndustry, and the Association of King County Historical Orgarrizations. We have also increased and strengthened our partnership with Central Washington University, utilizing their students and faculty to assist us with Ground Penetrating Radar, mapping, and online research. We will explore ideas on how to attract visitors during off peak times by collaborating with other local treasures such as the Roslyn Museum, Carpenter Museum, and Telephone Museum. The two dedication ceremonies ilrat were held Memorial Day weekend in the Roslyn Cemetery were able to be held because they were outside. We had planned a weekend filled with other events including a large indoor gathering to include dinner, music and dancing but scaled back due to Covid. The same held true for our events typically held as part of Roslyn's Coal Miner's Festival during Labor Day weekend. Only the outdoor King Coal Ceremony was held, forgoing the dinner, music, and dancing event that typically occurs that weekend. We were also able to safely hold our Croaiian Picnic event this year since it rs held outdoors. For that event we increased the boundaries so people could have more room to spread out. The Liquor Conlrol Board held our application until about 2 weeks before the everrt as their employees were working virlually. The process was also held up since they would only check their mail a couple times a week. We applied for the Liquor Control Board's Outdoor All Ages event permit to increase the physical boundaries to allow for social distancing. Since ihe LCB employees were working virtually from their homes this held up the permitting process. Because it was a staie agency, they were holding all applications and not reviewing or processing them until the beginning of July. That was very frustrating and stressful. 2500 character limil Additional Information We received $1 ,366.87 in LTAC funding in 2A21 for our Dedication Ceremony in the Roslyn Cemetery held during Memorial Day weekend. Creating a yearlong campaign and ouireach program is a new project. We are using our cultural assets and events as a foundation to build upon and create a larger outreach. Using data from our two largesi events in 2021 we are able to provide realislic numbers and projections. We have combined the data for both the Memorial Day Dedication Ceremonies at lhe Roslyn Cemetery and the Croatian Picnic_ These are the only two events that we collected data for. ln the future we will do a better job of capturing pertinent inforrnation for all our meetings and events. 2500 cha.acte.limit SUppOfting DOCUmentS You may upload any supporting docunrenls such as graphs. images. diagrams, marketing materials elc. The numbers above are based on compiling our data from our activities during 2021 (so far). They are combining data that we have and also using estimates. A chart has been provided to illustrate our projections. The Roslyn Cemetery is our largest draw throughout the year. We are adding both a digital guest book on our digital kiosk as well as a physical guest book for people to fill out when visiting the cemetery. These will assist us in capturing a more accurate account of the number of visitors and where they travel from. We will also ask if they are staying in local pard lodging. At our events such as the Croatian Picnic we will continue to offer surveys using door prizes to entice people to fill them out. We will also improve our data by coming up with a better way to do a direct count of attendees. We have sign in sheets to track visitors at our meetings where guest speakers are presenting. 2500 character limit Application Questions: Part 5 8l Funding Does your organization have, or have you applied for, grant funding fronr other sources? lf not, why not? lf yes, please list the funding you have for the project, including any volunteer and in-kind sources in Question 9l Project Budget Overview.
