The museum has been opened since 2015 and is in Kittitas County up on
Snoqualmie Pass, at The Pass Life development next to the Summit ski area, ideally
situated in between two extremely popular venues: Commonwealth restaurant and
Drubru brewery.
The curreni Board of Directors for WSSSM includes:

As a non-profit, WSSSM has developed broad and consisteni support from
individual and corporate donors across the state. including The Summit at
Snoqualmie, Northwest Winter Sports Foundaiion, Ski Washington, K2 Skis, Mervin
and more.
The museum does not charge admission (always FREE) and is a story-telling
museum. digital hands-on museum, with our most popular exhibits on our State's
Olympians, Washington Snow Sports Venues (ski area map), Ski Manufacturers, Ski
Mountaineering, Outdoors for All Foundation, Nordic and Alpine Traditions.
Avalanche Dogs, and more. The museum is run and staffed by one paid employee
who manages our operations & volunteers.
Due to Covid-'1 9. the museum was closed for the key ski months of January and
February 2021 . and we pivoted to online events and events with partners. We
utilized the 2021 Lodging Tax Funds (spent on one print ad in 425 magazine and
targeted Facebook advertising from May-December 2021) which increased our
visitor levels back to pre-pandemic levels in the summer of 2021 .
lf awarded, WSSSM would use the Lodging Tax firnds to suppo( three primary
aleas in 2022:
1. General Museum AwarenesslMarketing/TourismA,risit Us Campaign which will

1. Location: Located on Snoqualmie Pass. just '1 hour from Seattle, WSSSM is the
Northern Gateway Entrance to Kittitas County and the first-stop on the Central WA
Outdoor Experience. WSSSM is located just off l-90, on busy route 906, across the
streel from the Chevron and The Summit lnn in The Pass Life development between
two busy locations: the Commonwealth restaurant and Drubru Brewery.
2. Year-round destination; The main winter attraciion on Snoqualmie Pass is skiing
and snowboarding and The Summit at Snoqualmie draws millions of visitors.
Outdoor recreation in the summer, spring and fall makes the area a year-round
tourist destination. Being a museum about outdoor recreation, makes WSSSM an
ideal destination for the audience at tlre Pass. With Covid in 2021 , visitors sought
easy to access local recreation on the weekends and WSSSM benefited.
3. Story-Telling Museunr/CulturelHistory: Because we are a newer facility opened in
2015, the museum was created as a storytelling, interactive museum with extremely
modern design esthetics. Monitors throughout enhahce the experience of each
exhibit. Kids and adults alike love to push the button to activate the enormous rope
tow that resides in the museum's rafters. Because we are a smaller museum. each
visit is really a personal tour by a museum volunteer who will cater to each visitor's
interests. WSSSM has a unique proposition with little competition in the immediate
area. lf a visitor is looking for a cultural or historical experience on Snoqualmie Pass.
WSSSM is the place.
4. Museum Events: ln addition to our regular exhibits, we know the new
Snowboarding Exhibit will be a huge draw. Featuring an original film on the "History
of Snowboarding in Washington State" the exhibit and the events around it will draw
crowds. We also have several Speaker Series events planned with board metnbers
who have written new books, John Lundin's "Ski Jumping in Washington" and Lowell
Skoog's "Written in the Snows" (about ski mouniaineering). We have other events
planned with Sturtevant's, Guy Lawrence at The Summit, and Deb Armstrong.
5. Community and Event Space: WSSSM is an ideal event space with high ceilings,
concrete flooring, technrcal ameniiies and great views. Organizations like Team
Alpental Snoqualmie and other private individuals have utilized ihe museum for their
own parties. WSSSM also welcomes local connrnunity groups to use the museutl
and our conference room with digital screens and hook ups for meetings.

Typically, WSSSM hosts in person events that attract between 150-300 attendees
each. ln pre-pandemic times, these events included Anniversary Celebrations, book
or speaker talks, or visits by Olympians. ln 2A2O and2021. we shifted to an online
WSSSM Speaker Series (Zoom, sinrulcast on Facebook Live) and other partner
events to keep the museum top of mind whtle we were closed. These partnerships
will serve WSSSM well as we transition back to in-person events in 2O22. Examples
include:
WSSSM created mini exhibits inside Canlis Restaurant's tv'/elve Yurts. WSSSM
historians created an in person exhibit called "Sublime Sights" about Ski Jumping at
the National Nordic Museur.n in Seattle from May to July 2021. We hosted several
online evenls in conjunction with that exhibit, which was widely advertised and
attended. WSSSM Board Member and Olympian Deb Armstrong gave several talks.
including one for the parents and racers of the PNSA Ski Race Teams. Another
Speaker Series Event highlighted a WSSSM exhibit on Avalanche Dogs and
Backcountry Safety. The keynote speaker was Cle Elurr's Chris Martin, hjs K9 Anna,
and partners Ski Patrol Rescue Team (SPART), King County Search and Rescue
Association (KCSARA), and Drubru.
Thanks to a mrcro grant from Kittitas County, WSSSM partnered with Drubru to
create the Snoqualmie Pass Seavenger Hunt in the summer ot 2021 . This hunt was
created using an app called "Eventzee" and had over 300 participants compete to
earn points with quizzes, photo, video. QR and GPS location challenges. The hunt
was advertised on social media, digital advertising and with posters and flyers. lt
was a great engaging activity for tourists to do up at The Pass and brought guests
into the museum to engage in challenges! Other partners for this event include
Commonwealth and The Summit at Snoqualmie-
We have advertised these events throughout own website, our email list, Facebook
and lots of social media posts with partner organizations, mailed postcards and
flyers, We have also sponsored events where are target audience might be located
including the Warren Miller ski movies and the Ski Bonkers sale put on by
Sturtevant's. Booths at these events (over multiple days) have allowed us to
advertise our events, promote tourism at the Pass and in Kittitas County.
While specific events draw larger crowds, the regular museum visrtors have been
drawn in by permanent WSDOT freeway signage advertising the museum on l-90
both west and east bound (NEXT EXIT signage).

Whenever WSSSM does events at the museum. we partner with local Kittitas
County restaurants like Commonwealth and Drubru for food and beverages for
these events. We also partner with other location organizations to promote these
events through Facebook groups. As a member of CAMAH and NEW webmasier for
lhe group, we will uiilize our coniacts in Kittitas County to cross-promote our
activities and events with other museums and organizations. The WSSSM website
has a specific section on it highlighting local "partners" in the community. The

5l Future Plans
Please explain what plans exist to allow this project to become self-sustaining. lnclude any plans for ticket sales,
event sponsors, and other cost-recovery models.
Future Plans*From 2015-2020, WSSSM's annual advertising budget was very limited and was
comprised mostly of freeway exlt signage, large museum logo signage on route 906,
and other flag signage stationed directly in front of the museum. We invesied in a
professional booth to take to events (Warren Miller, Ski Bonkers, others) and in
giveaways for visitors including pens, stickers, notecards, gifi tags, and more. We
also spent time (but not a lot of money) revamping our website and expanding our
social media presence. We would use flyers, email e-blasts and mailed postcards (to
our own list) to promote our events. We also relied heavily on our partners and
social media to promote the museum and our events.
ln 2021 , with the help of Lodging Tax Funds, we were able to add targeted paid print
and online advertising to the mix and saw great success in visitor numbers going
back to pre-pandemic levels in the summer al 2021 as a result.
With the potential of 2022 Lodging Tax Funds, we are excited to continue ihat paid
print and online advertising and to potentially ad in OTT streamed video advertising
and some television advertising as well.
As WSSSM does not charge admission or a fee for events, our ability to earn
revenue outside of fundraising is limited to the gift shop sales.
Advertising = more awareness of the museum and our events = more visitors =
more supporters = more sales. etc.
The Lodging Tax funds are crucial part of our tourism marketing strategy for ihis
young non-profit facility.

Covid Closures ln 202A, WSSSM was open until March 15 and had steady visitors
(37 per day). Covid hits and WSSSM was closed over 6 months (196 days) from
March 1S-September 26. We opened again weekends only for 15 days (Sept. 26-
Nov. 15) and it was slow. Covid restrictions were in place (ordered WSSSM stylus
pens as giveaways for monitors). signage and PPE. Covid results in another closure
during ski season, Nov. '1 5. 2020-Feb.20,2021 (over 3 monihsl98 days). Since Feb.
20. WSSSM has operated Saturdays/Sundays, instead of Thursdays-Sundays. The
Covid silver lining? The sumnrer of 202 1 was our busiest yet at the museum - even
beating pre-pandemic levelsl
Covid Disappointments: ln the Fall af 202O, WSSSM was to have celebrated our sth
Anniversary with a live speaker and party. The Warren Miller Movie Series was
moved online. Fundraising was more difficult. but our suppoders were quite
generous. Due to Covid, WSSSM laid off our one paid employee who recruited
volunteers.
Covid lnnovations and Wins: Overall, Covid forced the museum to be more creative
and to reach out to different partners. These new partnerships and events will
expand WSSSM's audience and sustain us for years to come.
. Canlis Restaurant created special dining yurts decorated in Vintage NW Ski
Themes. They reached out to WSSSM and we became a partner and received
publicity from of one of Seattle's most iconic restaurants.
. WSSSM's new Speaker Series via ZoomlFacebook Live took advantage of Covid
with Deb Armstrong in Colorado. John Lundin in Sun Valley. eic. and brought
WSSSM programming into much larger audience. The Speaker Series will coniinue
in 2022.
. WSSSM historians John Lundin and Kirby Gilbert created "Sublime Sights" exhibit
on Ski Jumping at the National Nordic Museum in Seattle. This partnership allowed
WSSSM to expand it's reach outside Snoqualmie Pass. lt was a great experience for
WSSSM to partner, work, and learn from one of Seattle's most sophisticated
museum marketing teams.
. WSSSM, Dru Bru and others created the Snoqualmie Pass Scavenger Hunt in the
summer of 2021 because it could be done rn a "Covid-Safe" environment and was
great for families. The Scavenger Hunt will continue in 2022.
. With regard to volunteers. we have hired a new Operations and Volunteer Manager
who is creatively working hard to rebuild our volunteer crew. The WSSSM volunteer
program needed a reboot and Covid was the kick in the pants to rethink how we do
things.

Additional lnformation Thank you so much for reading WSSSM's application lor lhe 2022 Kittitas County
Lodging Tax Grant. We recognize that this is a lengthy process for committee
members, and we appreciate your time and energy to consider our application.
WSSSM worked hard in 2021 lo be good slewards of the Lodging Tax Funds. By
partnering with Craters of the Moon. our advertising was done creatively and
professionally AND at minimal costl Megan Smiley of Sunny & Smiley is a sought
after media buyer who we are lucky enough to have on our team at no cost. Not only
is Megan giving us the best advice, but she is also getting WSSSM great pricing.
As the Marketing Director for the museum, l, Kathy McDonald. bring more than 25
years of marketing expertise to our organization. I look forward to partnering with
others in the county to raise awareness and create tourism events and opportunities
for bolh WSSSM and others in the county. I have gotten much more involved in
CAMAH this year and am having fun creating a brand new website.
As WSSSM enters its 7th year of operation in 2022. we are super excited about 3
things:
1. NEW Snowboarding Exhibit and Film: After a Covid stall. the Snowboard exhibit
and film is on its way to being done. We are excited for the events and prontotion
around this new exhibit-
2. ln Person Events: As Covid permits, we are looking fonvard to oflering both in
person and hybrid/zoom events on a wide range of toptcs. We have a number of
folks lined up for this fall and winier!
3- OTTffelevision Advertising: Nothing showcases our museum like video can.
Should we be awarded Lodging Tax Grant Funds. we are especially interested in
OTT/Streamed Med ia and Television Advertisin g.
We are grateful to have been awarded a grant in 2021 and hope to earn your trust
again in 2022. We know that the museum is unique in being one of the only facilities
to provide culture and tourisnr drawing evenls in the Northern part of the County.
We hope that you enjoy our video presentation. and we look forward to meeting with
you and answering your questions.
Thank you.

Application Questions: Part 5
Please exp,ain.
Being a small rnuseurr, WSSSM hosts welcome each and every guest into the
museum and have a chance to chat and say hello. Volunteers are trained to count
each and every guest and are now asking zip code and ifand where the person has
stayed overnight and where. This "Direct Count" method will be invaluable in 2022.
Attached is the WSSSM Operations Checklist form that is used by our volunteers to
track information about visitors.
We will also work with The Summit lnn, our host hotel, to obtain detailed information
on heads in beds as a result of our in-person events for 2022.
The past actual used in this report are number from 2019, the last full year WSSSM
was open. The attached report shows details of our visitor survey.
.ln 2019. we were open 4 days a week (Thurs-Sun) with an average of 29 visitors
per day.
, ln 2020, from January-March 15, traffic was up to 37 visitors per day. We then
closed for Covid until Sept. 26 when we opened up for just 15 days (Sept. 26-Nov.
1 5) and had an average of 1 0 visitors per day (open just 2 days per week, Sat/Sun).
We nrissed Dec 2020 due to Covid.
. ln 2021 , we were closed Jan and Feb due to Covid which would have been a very
busy time at the museum. We open Feb. 20 and traffic was slow until May 30 with
just 13 visitors perday open Sat/Sun as the comnrunity began to open up. ln
JunelJuly and August (which coincided with our adve(ising) traffic really increased
to 35 per day. ln September 2021, we were at 28 people per day.
. For 2022, we project to be open 3 days a week (Fri-Sun) and hopefully Fri and Sat
nights (5-8 pm). With a projected average of 34 visitors per day (more in winter and
summer and less in spring and fall) that puts us back to 5,304 visits per year.
