WindFall Cider Fest is gaining notoriety and regional attention and 2022, our 4th year, will be hugel Response 2.1 *V\hy would lourisls travel lo Kittiias CoLrnty to aitend youi eveltlactivity/facility? As the largest public event for KEEN, WindFall will continue to showcase central Washington ai the height of the fall season. Hard cider is the nation's fastesi growing beverage and that industry continues to gain fans from around the country. Washington State is a hothouse of cideries and is globally known as the apple capilal of the world. We have done this event twice now and Ciderhouses are now asking WindFall if they may aitend. Musicians are asking WindFall how they can get a chance on the stage. Community members are asking how they can get involved. We are fortunate to work with veteran music festival producers, Chinook Entertainment, and add the Chinook "Where Great Music Meets the Great Outdoors" experience to the event. ln 2021 we welcomed bands from across the counlry: Hardwood Heart from Wyoming, Warren G. Hardings from Alabama, Massy Ferguson frorr Seattle, McKay & Leigh from Texas, lckes & Hensley from Tennessee, and local Ellensburg band Wavesons. Equal parts craft cider tasting and outdoor concert. WindFall appeals to a wide, adult audience. Travelers around the state have identified a new destination event where they can "meet in the middle" with friends who live on the opposite end of l- 90. Our 2021 online ticket list is attached. lt tracks about 250 of our guests. We also sold about 300 tickets at the door but square did not track addresses...we'll have to fix that for next year! 2500 charac(er linit Response 2.2 * Application Questions: Part 2 Describe ihe prior silccess of your eventlaclivityfacility itr atlraclion tourists. We are still colleciing our 2021 hotel data. Our 2018 and 201 9 events grew exponentially and we had hoped for a successful 2020 event which was cancelled due to Covid. ln 2021, we required all attendees show proof of vaccination which drastically increased our iicket sales- We had about 500 attendees in 202'1 with larger name bands and 10 cider houses. The PNW Cider Girl (a social media influencer) attended this year and promoted the event on social media for us. PNW Axe Throwing was a hugely popular addition to the event. and Ellensburg Hoops also atiended adding some flair and uniqueness to the event. Brosky's Food Truck provided food for attendees, and Ellensburg Desserts created unique cider-paired cupcakes for sale al the event. Using Cognito Forms for on-line ticketing, we collect all emails and mailing addresses of all tickets sold on line, and all sales of tickets, gifl certificates and promotional give-aways are also added to ihat database. 2A21 altendance data is aitached as an upload. ln addition, we have day-of ticket sales purchased at the window. But square does not capture addresses, so we'll have to work on that for next year. We have aboui 300 day-of ticket sales. ln 2019 Cider houses requested holel information and camping information, adding at least ten rooms for the weekend lhat we are aware of. We also reserve four rooms forthe bands for one night each. This year we had 4 RV overnights representing about 14 people, and 2 ients with 5 people staying on site. Ticket sales to out of area visitors (50 miles or more) are estimated to be 213 of total ticket sales based on previous years. ln 2A21 we had 500 guests and 60% of them were from more than 50 r'niles away. 2500 character limit 3l lmpact Response 3: Measuring Results* Describe holv you lrill pr omote your eventlaclivity/facility to attract tourisls. We will agarn use diverse marketing methods to achieve widespread print, digital, radio advertising largeted to our audience.ln 2O21 , we added The Stranger, Cherry Creek Media, and the Fair Guide to our advertising. We will work closely again with Chinook Entertainment to schedule big name bands coming from outside the immediate region AND who have a following that will travel. Thev 2022 proposal is attached. Bands with good marketing and loyal audience will be given preference over others. We have two local Kittitas County cider houses. Cideries with established clientele and followers will have a higher prioriiy than those with little or no marketing ability or fan base. Having cideries from oul of state proved io be problematic due to the nature of WSLCB, but having vendors from Spokane, TriCities, the Olympic Peninsula, and around the state will happen again. Our partnership with Sip NorthWest and CiderCraft magazines targets a very wide area (entire west coast) but the publications are selective as to audience. Their subscribers are mostly in Washingion, but are affluent tourists - craft beverage tourists. Their print magazines are widely distributed, heavily along the l-5 corridor from Portland to Bellingham, in high end hotels, restaurants, winerys, breweries, etc. and their digital presence is far wider. Their goal is to sell the whole norihwest as a craft beverage vacation destination. They will provide data to us regarding location of Interested people (that click through to our website) at the conclusion of this year''s advertising plan. Facebook and lnstagram advertising on our WindFall sites will again be utilized. We have excellent response rates to those ads. For 2A22 we anticipate working with the Chamber of Commerce again to conduct and focus our efforts, they may recommend other avenues of outreach for our marketing. 2500 character lirnit Application Questions: Part 3 4l Collaboration lf your organization collaborates or has created partnerships with other organizations, groups, or other events, how is this accomplished? 4.1 Collaboration* 4.2 Promoting Local Business * Our collaborations include working with Chinook Entertainment and Chinook Fest and mutually beneficial relationships with regional cider houses. local winery and local craft breweries. WSU's Master Cidernraker program has proven to be a great partner, and will increase their involvemenl for 2022. KEEN is a member of the Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce and our all volunteer board brings connections with CWU, conservation groups, and downtown business owners. CWU Recreation and Tourism program provrdes practicum students to help rxanage and plan lhe event and we anticipate that they will again be supportive. We were building a partnership with the NorthWest Cider Association, ihe US regional organization promoting apples, growers, cidermakers and distributors from the Northwest throughout the nation. We will continue to cultivate that relationship for 2421. Ticket prices will increase incrementally, and we will offer more side events - like paid cider-making workshops - that will attract more attendees and increase tevenue. Keeping great musicians is critical, and balancing what's affordable with whal's exciting and attractive to ticket buyers, will continue to be something that we monitor closely. We also plan to build the parlnership with Chinook Entefainment so that one day the partnership has them paying for the talent and KEEN can focus on other elements of the event. CiderCraft/Sip and NW Cider Association have both indicated thai they would support (sponsor) a juried/competitive program, which would attract the very highest quality products from around the State. NW Cider Assn may help us negotiate the pathways to being able to offer out of state products. Beverage competitions charge entry fees, and that would increase our income and boost our cachet. Which in turn would make us more attractive to sponsors. 2500 character lirylit 6l Additional lnformation Provide any additional information which will assist the Lodging Tax Advisory Committee in evaluating your project and its benefit to tourism. Our 2021 event came close to being cancelled, but in August we decided to require proof of vaccination in order to attend. Though it led to a few nasiy comments on social media, which were promptly reported, and a few ticket refunds, overall our attendance was really boosted afier announcing the requirement. The change made people feel safe and comfortable at ihis event. We also moved our cider houses out of the indoor rooms at Western Town so that nearly the entire event was outdoors. Those changes allowed our event to be the most successful yet! 2500 character limil 2021 was only our third Ciderfest, and the feedback we heard was that it was extremely well planned and the feedback from ciderhouses, publications and others in the industry has been entirely positive. Many of them now have WindFall on their radar as having a capable team with good support from the Ellensburg/Kittitas County community. There are several connections which have been identified that we will strengthen in the next planning process, and be able to take advantage of with more time and organization. But interest has been documented and the willingness of people to step oui for such a memory-making getaway event is proven. Attached is Chinook Eniertainment's proposal for 2022 This event is designed to highlight the agricultural environment that is not only Kittitas County but all of Central Washington. lt draws attention to snraller family farnrs, and the increasingly diverse ways that our rural nature is sustained by producing orchard commodities in a newer ways (that are actually really old). Cider is indeed trending, with a growing audience who support the market because they like the flavor; they like the variety of flavors, they like that it's locally madet they like that small orchards are getting a new lease on life; they like a frosty aduli beverage on a hot day (and they're maybe a little tired of bee$; they are avoiding gluten, they are focused on buying organicilocal; they want to try nrakrng it themselves: they want to share it with others. The music has also proven to be a great draw. Roots Music across the region continues to have a loyal audience, and in fact, attendance at Chinook Entertainment festivals is increasing although their 2020 event was cancelled due to covid and 2021 was cancelled due to fires nearby their location. 2500 .haracler linri!
