The National Trust for Historic Preservation defines Heritage Tourism as traveling to experience the places, artifacts, and activities ihat autheniically represent the stories and people of the pasi and present. Cultirral Tourism not only brings in revenue it also raises awareness and celebrates the distinct culture of our community. Our Mission Statement provides guidance to our project: "To preserve and maintain the Coal Miners' Memorial and give voice to the proper and rightful protection and preservation of our historic cemeteries." We oversee and marntain the Roslyn Cemetery as we'l as the Coal Miners' Memorial which is prominently located in downtown Roslyn. "To preserve, memorialize and communicate our community's rich ethnic and cultural history to citizens and visitors." With the influx of visitors and new community members we have the opportuniiy to create an experience for them to learn and participate in the unique cultural heritage of our area. "To employ cultural activities that honor and celebrate our community's heritage." We host several cultural events throughout the year including guest speakers that share stories pertaining to the history of our area. A yearlong advertising campaign will take advantage of the tourists that already come to our area as well as expanding our reach ouiside of Kittitas County to aitraci nrore visitors, building upon what assets and events we already have. Even though we scaled back our events in 2021 we were able to still attraci visitors from outside Kittitas County. During Memorial Day weekend we held two dedication cerenronies. On Saturday morning we held a dedication ceremony for the ltalian Monument that was erected in the Silvio Pellico Cemelery. ln the afternoon we dedicated the new Kiosk structure and interactive digital kiosk computer. Both these events were supposed to take place in 2A20 but were postponed and scaled back due to Covid. Despite the restrictions both events were well attended and provided us with valuable feedback via a visitors log that we had set out on Friday and Saturday. Capturing information was one of the things we learned about after going through this application process last year. The data we gathered from our guest book that we had out during only two of the four days of Memorial Day weekend proved io us what we already suspected, 57% were from out of the county and 19% were visitors that paid for local lodging. The visitors that came the furthest were a family of I from Richfield. Wisconsin. Another very interesting statisiic is that 37% of the visitors that signed our guest log didn't have family members buried in the Roslyn Cemetery. The largest cultural celebration we hold is the Croatian Picnic which is held the 3rd Saturday in July. No need to be Croatian, many people enjoy becoming Croatian for the day by adding an "itch" to their last name. This is a celebration of the largest cultural group to immigrate to our area. This is a farnily friendly event that attracts people from all over the country and even the world. This year we saw record attendance with an estimate of 450-500 people (usually we have between 350-400). At the entry gaie we asked people to fill out a survey that we used to draw names and award door prizes for participation. Even though we were overwhelmed at the entry gate and didn't capture as many people to fill out the survey as we planned, we slill had 'll 9 completed surveys to gather data from. 2500 character linril Application Questions: Parl 2 3l lmpact Response 3: Measuring Results* Desc.rbe lrolv you witl proniole yorr evetrV.tctivtly/lacilily to attract iourisis. Our group of volunteers have a broad reach and are deeply involved with our community which allows us to establish long lastrng relationships. Networking also has served as a means to collaborate with organizations outside of our county. lnvolvement with the Roslyn Cemetery has also provided us with an opportunity to network. collaboraie and partner with several organizations located outside of Kittitas County. Virtual meetings during Covid have provided us avenues of meeting people from the Black Heritage Society of Washington, Newcastle Cemetery & Historical Society. King County Historic Preservation Landmarks Commission, Museum of History & lndustry. and the Association of King County Historical Organizations. We have also increased and strengthened our partnership with Central Washington University, utilizing their students and faculty to assist us with Ground Penetrating Radar, nrapping, and online research. We will explore ideas on how to attract visitors during off peak times by collaborating with other local treasures such as the Roslyn Museum. Carpenter Museum, and Telephone Museum. The two dedication ceremonies that were held Memorial Day weekend in the Roslyn Cemetery were able to be held because they were outside. We had planned a weekend filled with other events including a large indoor gathering to include dinner, music and dancing but scaled back due to Covid. The same held true for our events typically held as part of Roslyn's Coal Miner's Festival during Labor Day weekend. Only the outdoor King Coal Ceremony was held, forgoing the dinner, music, and dancing event that typically occurs that weekend. We were also able to safely hold our Croatian Picnic event this year since it is held outdoors. For that event we increased the boundaries so people could have more room to spread out. The Liquor Control Board held our application until about 2 weeks before the event as iheir employees were working virtually. The process was also held up since they would only check their mail a couple times a week. We applied for the Liquor Control Board's Outdoor All Ages event permit to increase the physical boundaries to allow for social disiancing. Since the LCB employees were working virtually from their homes this held up the permitting process. Because it was a state agency. they were holding all applications and not reviewing or processing them until the beginning of July. That was very frustrating and stressful. 2500 character lirril Additional lnformation We received $l,366.87 in LTAC funding in 2021 for our Dedication Ceremony in the Roslyn Cemetery held during Memorial Day weekend. Creating a yearlong campaign and outreach program is a new project. We are using our cultural assets and events as a foundation to build upon and create a larger outreach. Using data from our two largest events in 2021 we are able to provide realistic numbers and projections. We have combined the daia for both the Memorial Day Dedication Ceremonies at lhe Roslyn Cemetery and the Croatian Picnic. These are the only two events that we collected data for. ln the future we will do a better job of capturing pertinent information for all our meeiings and events. 2500 ch6racter linrit Suppofting Documgnts You may upload any supporting docunrents s(ch as graphs. intages. diagra8rs, markeiing materjals. etc. LTAC Event Attendance Projections.pdf 40.29K8 You are allowed to sqbtnil up to 3 sinqle page iUS i-etter) docuntents in JPG.
